Essay 4 – Ideas of Knowledge
Thursday, November 20 – Outline Due (Bring to Class)
Tuesday, November 25 – Draft 1 Due (Upload to Canvas & Bring to Class)
Sunday, November 30 – Final Draft Due (Upload to Canvas)
In our final essay, we’re going to use the various skills we have built throughout the semester in terms of analysis, the use of sources, and argument to compare and contrast to similar stances on knowledge.
In this essay, you should discuss the following:
· How does Wallace's argument ("Kenyon Commencement Speech") about the value of the knowledge acquired in college compare with Mike Rose's discussion ("Blue-Collar Brilliance") of the knowledge acquired on the job in blue-collar occupations?
· What are the differences between the two?
· What are the similarities?
· Which do you agree with most? Why?
There are several things your essay will need:
· A strong thesis and consistent thesis support
· Support from both Rose’s article and Wallace’s speech
· Proper citations and a Works Cited page
· Analysis of both the content of each source and their argumentative
Thesis Workshop
A successful thesis statement provides:
· A context for discussion
· The speaker’s name as the subject of the sentence
· A strong active verb
· Your paraphrase of the main idea
· A preview of your supporting points
Identify each one of these components for the examples below:
1. Although both Rose and Wallace speak on people becoming more considerate of others in the world, Wallace’s focus on one having a choice is a more powerful and effective way of conveying knowledge.
2. While Rose argues that blue collar work requires intelligence and Wallace argues a Liberal Arts education should be about consciousness, both believe that formal education does not give people the right to judge other people’s intelligence.
3. While Rose believes that blue-collar workers impact society in ways that are overlooked, both Wallace and Rose believe that people needs to pay more attention to the world that is around them.
Now compose a potential thesis statement for David Foster Wallace’s speech. Use verbs like these:
Argues Inspires Encourages Illustrates
Explains Cautions Recommends Supports
Urges Conveys Believes Suggests
Identify each component of a successful thesis statement in your sentence.
