Philosophy/Ethics Paper

The paper(s) should be about the material we cover in class (subjects covered in the textbook). Feel free to have me review drafts of your papers. Papers should be 4-7 pages in length, double-spaced, typed, page-numbered, etc. Include your name. Make SURE they are in Microsoft Word format. (If you cannot put them in MSWord format, make sure you copy and paste the paper in an email so that I can read it) Please make sure you keep a back-up copy of your paper in case the original gets lost, etc. Also, please make sure that I confirm that I have received your paper, when you send it to me by email. The papers will involve arguing for a definite moral thesis, such as that Abortion is immoral in all/some cases. The goal is to persuade the reader of the truth of your assertion (moral position).

The methodology that we will use in the class will be primarily discursive reflection (dialogue) and argumentation. The methodology required for your paper is traditional argumentation. Please pay close attention to the hand-outs on Blackboard on "how to write papers." I also suggest that you to discuss your paper topic with me before you begin, and I am always willing to discuss any problems that arise as you develop your work. Feel free to stop by my office, or contact me via email me or by phone. Also, make sure that you argue for your position by citing reasons and defending principles or theories.

Chapter 6-12 (excluding 11)

Topics to pick a position on and argue for it:

-Drug Use

-Sexual Intimacy

-Feminism

-Freedom of Speech

-Racism

-Animal Rights

I need to pick a position on any of the topics above and make an argument that proves why my position is right. My midterm paper, for example, I did a paper about abortion and why it is unethical. I cited the book and built my arguments from there. We cannot use opinions or start sentences with “I think”. We need to “prove” that we are right with straightforward arguments.
