Summary

Article is narrating the story of guy whose childhood was painted by slavery. Scenario is a young lad was brought to Master Hugg’s family. He lived with them for about seven years. Initially he was taught by his mistress, who was a tender hearted and kind woman, whose behavior depicts piousness and virtuousness of her soul. But in the compliance of his husband, she ceased to instruct him. But in the mean time she gave him a inch. He learned alphabets and little how to read and write. This little training urged him to read and lighten up my mind with books, documents or any kind of study material. Often, He was punished to stay alone being suspected as If he was not reading or writing anything. My kind hearted mistress after the order of his husband was supposed to treat me as If I were a brute. I devised a plan. Often, he had to go outside he made friends and those friends were like high school teachers for him. With the passing days, a belief in him was growing stronger and even more horrifying. The belief that he would be a slave for rest of life, brought restless nights for him. Meanwhile, he got a document to study that includes the conversation between a slaveholder and the slave. Conversation depicted the power of truth over conscience of slaveholder. As he was turning the pages, he started to belief that his master was from a band of robbers who went in Africa and kidnapped them from their homes and reduced them to slavery. Now he felt ashamed of his own existence as he was living a life of slavery. From the book he got the idea to run away. But from some other documents he came to know that he would be murdered legally if he tried to escape. Then he decided to do that all in peaceful manner. He found way to enlighten his mind with power of knowledge. So, not physically at least mentally he could free his mind, he could polish his intellectual.

Response

Guy in article was facing slavery from his teenage life. Fortunately he was blessed with the strength to read and write. If one has encountered such sort of slavery, and by chance with God’s blessing one could learn something, he should not only learn that but should also implement that in his or her personality. As the guy mentioned in the article, his mistress was rude with him. It’s very natural, man treat others same as he is treated by the others. Restrictions applied on mistress made her a stone hearted woman. This created serious difficulties for the guy. But with high courage he devised good plans not to leave study. The struggle, the effort, the difficulties he faced to keep on learning, to keep on practicing education in his personality is commendable. After the realization that he was stolen from his home or he has been kidnapped from home, his peaceful decision to remain in slavery and not to left studies, though secretive studies, really deserves appreciation. But one thing to be noted is he made assumptions so rapidly about his master and mistress. That thing could harm him. Even he could get killed. But the shames he had for being a slave are too much. Every thought provoking and literate person couldn’t accept slavery as it is. His reaction was very natural. His reaction after knowing that his life has been treated so brutally was natural and showed his wisdom, enough. He realized the strength of education. He realized he can work better for others through his studies. This reflects his wisdom. He realized need of time. He is opportunist. He made his slavery commendable. He didn’t escape from his master’s house. His slavery becomes his struggle.
