GGH110 Final Exam Study Guide

Fall 2014

Map Questions: You will be asked to correctly locate and label countries of the world today on a blank map. In particular, you are expected to know the location of all of the current top 10 most populous countries. In addition, you should know the location of at least 10 of the other countries that have been discussed as specific examples of various concepts in class lecture.

Short Essay Questions: You will be asked to provide responses for three (3) of the following “BIG questions” regarding each of the chapters of our textbook that have been covered since the Midterm Exam. For each response, you must discuss two (2) specific examples—meaning you must use at least one particular term introduced in the course material (textbook or lecture) and refer to a particular place or culture group that illustrates that term/example. You should try to be as detailed and specific as possible, while remaining concise in your discussion. In general, you should plan to write 2-3 sentences for each example that you give, which would translate into roughly 4-6 sentences for each question.

1) Everyone must answer this one:

Ch. 8 – Political Geography – The BIG question: Discuss specific examples of how our political systems influence/impact cultural geography.

2) Choose one of the following:

Ch. 10 – Food and Agriculture – The BIG question: Discuss specific examples of the significance of agriculture in studying the cultural geography of the world today.

Ch. 11 – Industry – The BIG question: Discuss specific examples of the significance of industrial development (i.e., manufacturing) in studying the cultural geography of the world today.

Ch. 12 – Services – The BIG question: Discuss specific examples of the significance of the service sector in studying the cultural geography of the world today.

3) Choose one of the following:

Ch. 9 – Development – The BIG question: Discuss specific examples of how the concept of development impacts cultural geography.

Ch. 13 – Urban Patterns – The BIG question: Discuss specific examples of the significance of urban settlements (i.e., cities) in studying the cultural geography of the world today.

Ch. 14 – Resource Issues – The BIG question: Discuss specific examples of the significance of resource issues in studying the cultural geography of the world today.

Comprehensive Essay Questions: Finally, you will be asked to provide responses for two (2) comprehensive essay questions. You should be prepared to discuss at least three (3) specific examples for each question. Again, generally speaking, you should think of an appropriate response as consisting of 2-3 detail rich sentences for each example you are discussing—hence, somewhere on the order of 6-9 sentences per question. BE ADVISED THAT THE EXAMPLES YOU USE FOR THESE QUESTIONS MUST BE DIFFERENT FROM THE ONES THAT YOU USE FOR THE SHORT ESSAY QUESTIONS.

Everyone must answer each of these questions:

4) As stated on the syllabus, the first Core Learning Outcome for this course is that you should be able to: Describe and evaluate the characteristics, distribution, and complexity of Earth's cultural regions . In your response, you should identify each of the LE questions by referring to its letter as given in the list above (e.g., question “a”).
