PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Ecology Club at Memorial High School in Libertyville, Illinois, aims to make students more aware of ecology issues in their school and community. In the fall, the club sponsors an event for students to pick up cans, bottles, and other recyclable materials in local parks. They sort the materials and take them to a recycling center, which pays them for each type of deposited material. As a member of the Ecology Club, you and another student are writing a memo about this event to your faculty advisor. You will collaborate on the memo by working with comments and tracked changes and then inserting charts into the document.
GETTING STARTED
Download the following file from the SAM website:
· SC_Word2013_C8_P1a_FirstLastName_1.docx
Open the file you just downloaded and save it with the name:
· SC_Word2013_C8_P1a_FirstLastName_2.docx
· Hint: If you do not see the .docx file extension in the Save dialog box, do not type it. Word will add the file extension for you automatically.
To complete this Project, you will also need to download and save the following support files from the SAM website:
· support_SC_W13_C8_P1a_chart.xlsx
· support_SC_W13_C8_P1a_memogn.docx
With the file SC_Word2013_C8_P1a_FirstLastName_2.docx still open, ensure that your first and last name is displayed in the footer. If the footer does not display your name, delete the file and download a new copy from the SAM website.
PROJECT STEPS
Combine the revisions from the file support_SC_W13_C8_P1a_memogn.docx, available for download from the SAM website, into your SC_Word2013_C8_P1a_FirstLastName_2.docx document as follows:
a. Label unmarked changes in the original document (SC_Word2013_C8_P1a_FirstLastName_2.docx) as Sam Wycliffe.
b. Label unmarked changes in the revised document (support_SC_W13_C8_P1a_memogn.docx) as Gabe Newhouse.
c. Show the changes in the original document.
d. After combining the documents, turn off Track Changes.
Accept the revision from Gabe Newhouse to the document title (“Interoffice Memorandum”).
Reject the revision from Sam Wycliffe to the first sentence (“…by any measure.”)
Read the first comment from Sam Wycliffe, make the change he suggests, and then delete his comment.
Read the next comment from Sam Wycliffe and then insert the following response:
Good idea. I inserted a pie chart below.
Read the next comment from Gabe Newhouse and then delete it.
Read the next comment from Gabe Newhouse and then insert the following response:
I inserted a column chart showing this information.
Accept the last two revisions from Sam Wycliffe (to the last sentence before the table and to the table’s title).
e. Read Sam’s last comment, make the change he suggests, then delete the comment.
f. Do not delete the comment from Gabe Newhouse as you make the change.
In the sentence beginning with “The following table…”, change “table summarizes” to table and chart summarize so that the sentence begins with “The following table and chart summarize the materials we collected…”.
In the sentence beginning with “In the next few days…”, change “table” to memo so that the entire sentence reads, “In the next few days, we will post this memo on our blog.”
At the end of the last sentence in the paragraph (the sentence you just edited), insert a comment with the following text:
I am planning to post the final memo on Friday.
In the blank paragraph below the table, insert a chart based on the information in the table as follows:
g. Choose Pie as the chart type.
h. Copy the Recyclable Materials Collected table and then paste it in the chart spreadsheet window.
i. Remove the Estimated Funds data series from the chart.
Apply the following formatting to the pie chart:
j. Change the chart style to Style 11.
k. Change the chart colors to Color 2.
l. Change the chart title to read:
Types of Recyclable Material Collected
In the blank paragraph on page two, insert the following Excel data:
n. Use the data in cells A1:E3.
o. Paste the data as a link, and keep the source formatting.
Below the new table, insert and format a chart as follows:
p. Choose Clustered Column as the chart type.
q. Copy the table you just inserted and then paste the data in the chart spreadsheet window.
r. Remove the Category 3 and Category 4 data from the chart.
Format the column chart in the Word document as follows:
s. Change the chart type to a 3-D Clustered Column chart.
t. Change the chart title to read:
Recyclable Materials Collected 2011-2014
u. Format the numbers on the Vertical (Values) axis to display Currency values with 0 decimal places.
v. Change the height of the chart object to 5”.
w. Add an outline to the chart using the Plum, Accent 2 (6th column, 1st row in the Theme Colors palette) outline color.
x. Add an Offset Diagonal Bottom Right shadow (1st column, 1st row in the Outer Shadow palette) to the entire chart.
Format the table of Excel data in the Word document as follows:
y. Apply the List Table 3 – Accent 31 style to the table.
z. Change the font color of the text in row 1 to White, Background 1 (1st column, 1st row in the Theme Colors palette).
aa. AutoFit the table to the contents.
ab. Center the table on the page.
ac. Delete the blank paragraph above the table.
ad. Break the link to the Excel worksheet.
Your document should look like the Final Figure on the following pages. Save your changes, close the document, and exit Word. Follow the directions on the SAM website to submit your completed project.
