Social Context of Temporal Sequences

This article is written about understanding the way consumers evaluate and register temporal consequences in order to help marketing professionals better understand their target markets and run more effective marketing campaigns. “Temporal sequence refers to a sequence of happenings in a space of time. Humans remember events as they occur in a sequential order in time, such as before or after another event” (Jennifer). This article goes into depth about how a consumers experience differentiates depending on if they are alone browsing a gallery or shopping (solo context), or shopping with friends and family (joint context).

In general, people tend to prefer “improving versus declining sequences that differ only in the order in which episodes occur” (Bhargave). These moments of sequence are defined usually by their peak intensity or end intensity level, as these are the moments we recall the easiest. A number of studies where cast during the evaluation of temporal sequencing. One this these tests involved giving two consumers the same juice, and observing as they both expressed their opinions on the product. This test delve deeper taking into account the facial expressions of the consumers, noticing that those with similar body language would converse together. “Research has revealed that consumers often bond over shared experiences, and this connected social environment can influence their experience evaluations” (Bhargave).

Another test shows that your social environment may also have effects on the way you proves temporal sequences. During this study the results showed student from East Asia who were socially invested had a more holistic view, compared to the Westerners who has less social ties and tended to be more precise in their processing.

This paper was broken down into four study topics: awareness of others during an art sequence, pronoun prime preceding an art sequence, priming processing style before a vacation sequence, and moderation-of-process for an art sequence. The studies were conducted using pieces of art, and even simulating a vacation experience in order to create situations, than observing the patients during this process.

This article was from a point of view that temporal sequencing can be effected by social environment. I agree with this study. I think using the four different study processes gives a diverse enough spectrum to gather results from. The conclusion to this study in a nutshell is that joint experiences tend to trigger a more holistic and less analytic way of processing these sequences, compared to a solo experience which allows for a much more analytical processing style. Another conclusion is made that, from my understanding stated, in the long-term a human will still process his thought analytically, producing the same end result.

Knowledge on the topic of Temporal Sequencing and how it is processed depending on different circumstances is an important factor for marketing professional. This indirectly can help you decide what to display, and which consumers you are trying to market. This helps save time and money. If I properly understood the second conclusion that would mean marketing professionals need to take advantage of the consumers in a social environment before they are back in their solo environment.
