In looking at the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, many clinicians and researchers believe that these criteria could be applied to behaviors outside of substance use to classify other addictive behaviors. To this end, gambling disorder was added as a diagnostic classification in the DSM-5. Imagine that you are on the next DSM revision committee. What addictive behavior (not including substance use or gambling) would you lobby to include as a diagnostic classification? Explain your reasoning for including this addictive behavior.
In this assignment, think about symptoms and syndromes which have not yet been added to the DSM-5. For example, gambling was newly added to the DSM-5. Think about your own personal experiences, and those of close family members and friends and acquaintances. A good source of information was written by Clay (2011) about the recent revision of the DSM for the APA; this might give you some insights. Please do NOT write about substance use, abuse, and dependence!
