It is possible to quit smoking

Do you know how dangerous smoking cigarettes is?  According to CDC website, "More than 480,000 deaths annually (including deaths from secondhand smoke).” Many people have the smoking habit even though they know how dangerous it is for their health.  Those people are divided into three groups, the first group are people who have tried to quit but they could not, the second group are people who have quit smoking but have returned to the same habit after a while. And the last group which I think is the worst, are people who do not even have the intention to quit smoking.  For these groups, I have some steps to do to help them quit this bad habit. To quit smoking, people should be contented with the decision of quitting, not being forced to do so; by cutting down the number of cigarettes a day, finding alternatives, considering their health, and taking surrounding people into account.

The reason why people return to smoke after a while of quitting smoking is that they were not satisfied with their action, as they did not really believe in themselves.  For instance, some people quit smoking just because their job do not allow them to smoke, or some other people quit because of pregnancy.  Therefore, if you want to quit, you have to convince yourself with reasons that makes you hate smoking and never smoke again.  For example, you should read information about smoking and how it affects your health, or you can also watch videos about people who have quit smoking and how they feel about it.

After you have been convinced, you should immediately start the steps to quit.  The first step is to try to cut down gradually on the number of cigarettes you smoke a day, until you stop completely. For example, if you smoke one pack a day which usually contains 20 cigarettes, start to smoke 17 for the following week, and then 14 for the week after, until you smoke zero.  I think that this way is much better and more efficient, because if you quit immediately, your body would not get used to the sudden lack of nicotine, and it might go into withdrawals.  So it is always safer to take more time than doing it right away.

Many people have difficulties quitting a habit that they have been doing for many years.  Those people can find alternatives for cigarettes to facilitate this process.  For example, there is a new product called e-cigarette. It is an electronic cigarette that has many types-one type is without any nicotine.  This e-cigarette can help these people to smoke a less dangerous cigarette and it is almost the same as the normal cigarette.  It also has different flavors that meet every body’s taste, and it smells good compared to the normal cigarettes. With this e-cigarette, people can smoke normally with a good taste and beautiful smell, while their body is adjusting to be free of nicotine. after that they can easily quit by cutting down on using the e-cigarette.

As I mentioned above, more than 450,000 people die every year.  A very helpful way to quit smoking is to consider your health while you are trying to quit.  Many people are dying from smoking and many others are still suffering from it.  For instance, smoking is very bad for lung and it could cause lung cancer, it is also very harmful for your heart because it might cause a heart disease, and many others bad effects to you your body.  Some people disagree with that, because they think that they have been smoking for a long time and they still do not see any negative side effects.  However, I rebut their thoughts because the effects of smoking is different from a person to another, some people get sick after two years of smoking and some others after ten years.  Therefore, you should not be listening to those people and start your quitting plan as soon as possible.

To be in the safe side, try as much as you can to avoid being around smokers while you are quitting and especially after you quit, because usually when you associate with them, you would probably want to smoke at least one cigarette, which could be a sign for many people to return to smoke again.  Thus, you should always be busy with something else.  For example, a friend of mine have quit smoking for three months, he felt that he was about to smoke again because many of his friends are smokers, then he registered in a gym and start working out every day just to take care of his health and to avoid being with smokers all that time.

Smokers do not only affect themselves, they also affect other people in various ways.  For example, people get annoyed of the smell of the cigarette while they are walking in the street or when they are eating.  It is also bad for their health as secondhand smokers because they inhale the smoke that comes out of the cigarette.  Moreover, it is very dangerous for babies and pregnant women.  Smokers who have children could pass down their smoking habit and put their children in danger because they always smoke in front of them.

On the whole, the people who want to quit smoking should take their time to think about it until they believe that they can quit, then they should start immediately or otherwise they would keep delaying every time.  Once they start their should begin with smoking fewer cigarettes every week, if they cannot, then they should find alternatives like the e-cigarette to make it easier, while that process, they should try to know why they are doing it by reading articles or watch videos about how aggressive it is on their health, they also should think about how it affects the people around them.
