Essay 1

People face different experiences. Many experiences can help people to become better. So people should not miss a chance of experiencing something because they will always learn something. I am an immigrant who is living in the United States. Since I had a chance to study abroad; I was so excited not to miss it. I know that an immigrant can face many different problems and their lives can be harder than others, however, studying abroad can make a person a lot better than how he/she used to be. I am going to talk about many issues I have faced while studying abroad. I am Kuwaiti student who had to learn a new language and to get used to the accent.

I have been here in the United States only for 2 years. When I first came here, I was about to quit studying abroad because of the English language. I thought that I was never going to learn it as much as I do now. When I read a book, I barely understood what the book was about. I almost gave up in learning the English language. After like half a year of struggling, I finally convinced my self to believe that I could make it and learn the language.  As I said before, in my first days I was really struggling with learning the language, however, when I realized that I could make it; I started to do extra work by myself not only doing school’s homework. I started to watch TV shows and I read books that helped me to find out about many new words. After that, many things just got way easier than how they used to be. I started to get good grades in my English classes in the English language institute where I was studying English. Furthermore, I even began to love going to class because I felt that I was getting better everyday not like the first days where I did not feel improving at all. In my first days when I was talking to people, they had hard time understanding what I was trying to say to them because of the lack of vocabularies.

Accent is one of the biggest problems that any international student can face while studying abroad.  My accent has caused me facing a lot of problems. My first language is Arabic, which it does not have to do anything with English. For instance, in the Arabic language we pronounce the letter P as B, so when I say the words that have the letter P; people never understand me. There was one time where I needed to spell out my name to the customer service of T-Mobile; he misspelled most of my name because of my accent. Another time where I faced troubles with my accent is when i was ordering in McDonalds in car service. I received another sandwich not the one I wanted. So there are many situations where my accent can cause me troubles but I always try to stay positive because staying positive is the key in getting better with the accent. I know that trying to overcome this barrier is not easy but I believe that we have to because we do not have a choice and that’s the life.

In conclusion, living as an international student can teach us many things. So we should accept the challenges no matter how hard they can get. Because we are going to eventually learn something that can make us special. We should not take the language as an excuse for not studying abroad. Barriers can always be here and we will always have to face them. So learning a new language should not be stopping us from reaching our dreams. If we believe in ourselves we can overcome anything even though it’s difficult.
