Introduction
Social media is the new hype in our society. This is a virtual world created through the internet where people from all corners of the world get to meet and socialize. The most common of these social media sites include: Face book, Twitter and Instagram. People use social media to share their lives by use of photos and status updates with their friends, this is a fast mode of communication but it is also harmful in that it has disrupted the original social setting of our societies. Social media has played a significant role in the process of globalization, but it has proven to be more harmful than helpful ( Perse, 114).
Today, we find children as young as 5year olds glued to social sites such as face book. There is an advantage here since often so long as on is online, they never lack another online friend to talk to. However, the downside to this is that social media cripples effective one on one communication where when one is faced by an actual being, they cannot communicate effectively (Bomann-Larsen & Oddny, 118). Social media also distorts one’s esteem as these social media freaks feel out of place when in actual social gathering and would prefer being online than offline. This is a form of handicap as human being are designed to be social being and when they are better at conveying information better in a virtual world than the actual world, something is genuinely wrong.
The other harm brought about by social media is the fact that it is very addictive. This is seen through a statistical analysis that was conducted on social media in America. The finds of this research showed that up to 70% of Americans were active social media user and over 45% were multiple log in members on a daily basis. Interestingly, in most work places and schooling institutions, people preferred spending their breaks by log in to social media sites that taking a walk or exercising. This clearly shows how addictive social media is that it has enslaved us to itself that we literally, live, breath and speak its language (Parrillo, 351).
Adding salt to injury, social media has set a new standard that all its users must attain to be fully embraced into this world. These standards dictate our mode of dressing, our language and even our thinking(Bryfonski, 65). In elaboration of this, there is what social media has ascertained to be a cool way of dressing and has upheld this through ensuring those who live up to this dress code get multiple like while those who defile it, get minimum likes and comments. The other standard is the language use where there are various short forms used to convey information such as ‘ttyl’ which means talk to you later. On such a scale one who fails to embrace these short forms is shunned and made to feel inefficient for use of proper language. It is in the cause of trying to please social media that self image is lost and one becomes a zombie to social media standards and a stranger to themselves (Bomann-Larsen & Oddny, 122).
The human brain is a powerhouse of sorts. This means it needs to be constantly powered by a series of variant environments and tasks so as to bring out the maximum capabilities that it holds. It is rather sad to say that social media is so far the leading cause of brain damage and distortion. Social media revolves around three major policies which are commenting, updating and scrolling (Parrillo, 354). If an individual does this daily for around 14hours, their mind deteriorates since these simple tasks become assimilated into the mind and become automatic therefore not needing much effort to retrieve(Bomann-Larsen & Oddny, 123). Therefore, if one does nothing but this, or yearns for nothing more than this, they become dependent on a small part of the bran while the rest wastes away in the idling process. There is an interesting fact that has been recently been discovered that social media demeans reasoning as it’s simple straightforward status’s are hardly a task so over indulgence in it, will burn out important brain cells resulting in poor reasoning evident in the forms of decision made by most social media addicts (Bryfonski, 65).
Conclusion
True social media has enabled communication, has been an informative source, has benefited companies in the process of effective product promotion and marketing, and has encouraged globalization. But the cost to pay has been the fact that it has entrapped us that we are constantly anxious to log in and be part of its events, in a strange way, social media has taken over our lives, our secrets, our emotions and interactive capabilities. It is therefore my hope that someone comes up with a method in which this form of media can be controlled and individuals can get back their lives.
