With increasing changes in organizational structure and the environment within which they operate, change management has become more important than ever before. There is need for organizations to respond to environmental dynamisms if they are to survive. Inadequacies if traditional leadership necessitated the emergency of transformational leadership, which focuses on cooperation, collaboration and involvement of all relevant stakeholders in an organization. His enhances effectiveness in decision-making and implementation. Some unique characteristics, which distinguish transformational leaders from the rest, include (Bass, 1998).
Good communication skills, transformational leaders usually have a tongue, the usually understand what to say, where and when depending on the circumstances. Transformational leaders are also inspirational and motivation because they are able to secure people will to accomplish a certain goal regardless of how difficult the circumstances are. A transformational leader is adaptable to change; he or she is creative and innovative, an attribute that leads them to find new ways to handle the constantly changing organizational environment. Vision forms the core of a transformational leader; they usually have a mental picture of the path they want their organization to take in future. They also think ahead, taking proactive measures on matters they feel may negatively affect the organization (Bass, & Riggio, 2006).
From my own considered opinion, the current United States president is a transformational leader. His speeches are inspiring and some of his initiatives are visionary; the healthcare scheme is a good case in point here. The Chinese leadership is also transformational because successive presidents have been able to lead the giant economy from strength to strength. Former Libyan leader would have been a transformational leader where it not for his dictatorial tendencies, he had inadequacies in communication and inspiration probably the reason why he was fallen from the reins of power because he could not negotiate. If he had good communication, he would have been a transformational leader (Bass, & Riggio, 2006).
