Public perceptions of research on children and adolescents.

Directions: Interview an adult concerning his or her opinions about research on the behavior/mental health problems of children and teens. This person may or may not be well known to you; even a family member is fine. However, the person you interviewed should NOT be a student at WSU.

This is the least structured of the activities. However, I expect that you will ask your person first about his or her experience with children and adolescents who have psychological problems. Then ask the person about such things as these:

a) What is your general opinion of research on children/teens and their problems?

1

b) Do you think research on children/teens and their problems is valuable? Why or why not? c) What worries/concerns do you have about claims of treatments for child and adolescent problems

whether or not there is research to back up the claims? d) Do you think mental health problems of children and teens are important enough to spend public money to have research done?

Write a 2-3 page report of your interview. Describe who you interviewed in very general terms: No names, please! Write nothing that could definitely identify the person that you interviewed. Describe what their experience is with children or adolescents, if any (e.g., parent, teacher, etc.). Tell me also what your relationship is to the person you interviewed. Finally, give your overall opinion of how much you think your interviewee pays attention to research on children & teens, and explain why you think their view of research is what they state it to be. Tell me your opinion of their viewpoint.

It will be particularly appreciated if you send the person you interview a brief note or card (or even an email message) thanking him/her for the interview.
