PART 2: News Literacy and Bias in the Media
Purpose: When thinking about citizenship and democracy, we should also take a look at how technology affects campaigning, an integral (although possibly regrettable) part of our democratic process. One of the ways technology has influenced campaigning is in bias in the media. Now while this has always been an issue in elections, one could make an argument that technology has helped to exacerbate the issue. This activity is meant to get you thinking about your own bias and how it might impact your perception of candidates. To do this we are actually going to look at the Nixon and Kennedy debate. This was the first televised presidential debate.
Task:
