PPT Presentation Guidelines

BUS 115 – PPT Research Presentation, In-Class Page 1 of 3

Goals

The following will act as a framework for presentations. This is based, in part, on the University

of Michigan - Flint Writing Center’s guidelines. There are several goals for work in this class:

 Learn about research, use of the library, and internet applications for research  Perfect skills regarding use of computer-based productivity tools to enhance presentations

and written reports.

 Team and Group Collaboration skill development when working with others in groups  How to effectively present information in a group setting

Sequence

The following order can act as a guideline, and you may want to alter it as you develop your PPT

project. Pay attention to the schedule outlined on the calendar for the class requirements. It

includes many of the graded requirement dates.

1. Select your group.

 Since the entire group will receive the same grade, it is important to make sure everyone works. This means that there shouldn’t be any excuses by other team

members for their lack of participation. If there are incidences of non-cooperation,

the student may be penalized. Do not wait until the 11 th

hour to address this.

2. Agree upon a topic to work on.

 This can cover any aspect of the field of business and its application, with use of Excel.

 An example could be the use of Excel in the field of Alternative Energy, with a subdivision of growth potential over time.

3. Develop a framework for workload.

 Don’t over-extend yourself. The subject and depth you select should be feasible to accomplish within the timeframe to complete it. Don’t forget the due dates.

 Be original and do not revisit something that was done previously, by either yourself, or another group.

 For all Team Members, determine who does what. This is critical since you will need to provide a timely submittal.

4. Establish a schedule

 Make it realistic.

 Don’t try to get everything done at once.

 If a schedule is not agreed upon, initially, it is likely that your productivity will fall short of your goals.

5. Give yourself plenty of time to write and revise the project/presentation

 Be practical. Be careful of relying on someone who seems to be putting their work off.

 Don’t try to get everything done at once. If you do, there is a much greater chance for mistakes due to rushing.

 This is one of the weakest areas when working with team members. Coordination and Collaboration are key issues when working in groups.

Topic Requirements

1. Remember that you are attending a university-level class and the quality of all presentations and discussions need to reflect this.

2. Excel application and library research should be used as a basis.

Topic Recommendations

Note: The best approach in selecting a topic is to meet with team members and agree upon

something that is of mutual interest.

1. One option could be to select a ‘Major’ as a field of interest for your team, which may be in the area of your major.

2. Below is a list of topics that have been discussed in the past. This is not a complete list and you can select another subject. However, remember this is an Excel-Based project.

a. Solar vs. Conventional Energy b. Energy Star Product Advantages c. Historical Gas Prices in Various Countries d. Entry Level Salaries for Disciplines e. Advantages in the Use of Excel in Manufacturing f. Health Care Costs g. SWOT Analysis of Starting a Business h. Global Warming and Adverse Effects

PPT Requirements

There will be 3 team members, with total slides ranging between 10 and 13. If more slides are

necessary that’s OK, but beware of the time limits for presentation, which is about 7 minutes.

 Assign 3 slides per member, not including Title and References slides. If you find that more slides are necessary that is acceptable.

 Each Team must produce a PPT set with a minimum of the following: o (1) Transition o (1) Animation o (2) Hyperlinks (these must be arrows, as developed in the ICW and not simply

URLs)

o (2) Multi-tier bullets  At least (1) Table and (1) Figure/Graph/Chart that utilizes Excel logic  At least (2) References referred to within PPT  PPT Slide set, as noted under ‘PPT Slide Sequence’

Lecture Criteria

1. All members must be present 2. Business Casual Deportment 3. Lecture Flow –

a. Slide information is discussed and not simply read aloud to the class b. Speakers are interested in the subject c. Conclusions are based on findings and discussion d. At least (2) References

4. Lecture encompasses specified timeframe.

PPT Slide Sequence (11 – 14 Slides)

1. Title (1 Slide)

 List the following:  Title, Date of Presentation, Class ID, Names of Team Members, Instructor

2. Introduction for Topic Presentation (1 Slide)

 Include the reason(s) you believe this topic is worthwhile, such as in seeking a specific major

 This represents the current job market, per major, given current economic conditions

3. Discussion…a few suggestions………(6 - 8 Slides)

 Elaboration of reasoning for topic selection and relevance

 Compare/contrast, such as a SWOT analysis, and/or use of Table

 Relevance in the current economy, such as why your information is useful

 Assessment/Evaluation Summary –  Provide detail for reflecting on the positive points, and/or negative points

o A table, graph and relevant info displaying knowledge of Excel

4. Conclusion(s) (1 - 2 Slides)

 List a summary of your findings (+/-), such as in a table

 If your findings disagree with the reference(s) that’s ok, and it would be a good idea to elaborate on your reasoning

5. Recommendation(s) (1 Slide)

 Outline these, such as with a table  A better approach for the study would be to…

6. References (1 Slide)
