For this assignment, you need to identify one of our major themes as it appears in two of our texts. Your goal is to identify whether that theme is similar or dissonant in each text. The idea is to compare and contrast the texts, but to do so with having arrived at a reasonable thesis concerning not only if the texts are similar or different, but WHY THAT SIMILARITY OR DIFFERENCE IS SIGNIFICANT. The answer to this question should be the thesis of your paper.
Some of our major themes include the following (not an exhaustive list):
Hubris
Contrapasso
Religion
Progress
Hegemony
Science
Class and economics
Gender and sexuality
Race and oppression
Society and social organization
Monism/Dualism and the mind-body split
Meaning making
You might consider approaching the planning of your paper in the following way:
Step One: Pick a theme with which you feel comfortable and which you understand well.
Step Two: Pick two texts with which you feel comfortable and which exhibit your theme well.
Step Three: Generate an outline in which you itemize in two columns how your chosen theme compares in the two texts.
Step Four: Generate a thesis and send it to your wise professor so that she can point you in the right direction (just in case your idea is very, very bad. It happens). Do not do this the night before the essay is due.
Step Five: Generate three criteria that you plan to discuss.
Step Six: Write your essay.
Step Seven: Submit your essay.
Step Eight: Enjoy a tasty beverage.
You might want to consider formatting your paper in the following way:
Introduction: Define the theme and identify the texts you plan to investigate. List the three criteria you plan to use, and finish with your thesis statement.
Body Paragraph One: Criteria one as it appears in text one (connect to thesis).
Body Paragraph Two: Criteria one as it appears in text two (connect to thesis).
Body Paragraph Three: Criteria two as it appears in text one (connect to thesis).
Body Paragraph Four: Criteria two as it appears in text two (connect to thesis).
Body Paragraph Five: Criteria three as it appears in text one (connect to thesis).
Body Paragraph Six: Criteria three as it appears in text two (connect to thesis).
Conclusion: Wrap up your ideas and restate your thesis.
