GEO Paper outline
Preferred:
· 1.5 line spacing, 10- or 11-point compact font
· 1” margins all around
· Your name in a corner at the top of the first page
· Title centered; NO separate title page.
· Headings and subheadings as appropriate
· Number pages.
· Use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
· If it is to be an electronic submission, label both the paper and the FILE with your name and identifying information about the assignment.
· If it’s a paper submission, staple the pages; no binders or folders!
References and Citations:
· Use the Annals of the Association of American Geographers system of citation, APA, or MLA;
· Include a bibliography
· Information presented, other than “common knowledge,” must be attributed to a source by means of citations.
· Documentation (citation) does not ordinarily carry over from one paragraph to the next.
· References sited/bibliography in same document as body of paper.
General Comments:
· Organize your presentation into sections, with appropriate transition sentences:
· Introduction (statement of the purpose of the paper; statement of the thesis or arguments; statement of key points to be discussed)
· Body (argument and evidence supporting the argument)
· Conclusion (key findings).
· Titles should be informative.
· Describe your topic, not the assignment.
· Proofread.
· Aim for a clear, direct, and concise writing style; avoid agency-speak and don’t use words you don’t fully understand; avoid complex constructions, and the passive voice, and do not be afraid of the first person if its use improves the reader’s understanding.
· Use properly labeled and referenced figures and tables to supplement the text.
Important Notes:
Any attempt to pass off someone else’s work as your own is plagiarism, and will lead to a zero on the paper and disciplinary action through university channels.
No paper used for credit in another course may be reused, or used simultaneously, without permission of both instructors.
