COURSE OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

Have become acquainted with professional journals and Internet sources appropriate to his/her discipline.

Have read and evaluated current literature in mathematics or mathematics education, computer science or its application in information systems, as appropriate to the student's major.

Have done a literature search relating to a specific problem or topic.

Have written a professional-type paper.

Have synthesized and used background knowledge from his/her major in addressing a problem or issue in depth.

Have presented the results of his/her work orally to faculty and fellow students.

In addition, a student with a mathematics or computer/information science major will:

Have reviewed and organized his/her undergraduate portfolio.

Have written a self-assessment of his/her professional and educational progress, in relation to the major’s goals and objectives, based upon the evidence in the portfolio.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The coordinator will assign the student a project advisor based upon the research topic area and/or major.

The student will:

Do a literature search to produce an annotated bibliography (both print and electronic sources) relating to the topic.

Read, summarize and critique three resources relating to topic chosen.

Write a 15-20 page (minimum) paper (double spaced). This paper should include both background information and some original work, usually in the form of examples. For more details, see the attachment.

Make an oral presentation of your project to the departmental faculty and other students registered for this course. The presentation should be approximately 15-20 minutes long.

Meet with the project advisors weekly on a mutually agreed upon day and time.

In addition, mathematics or computer/information science majors must:

Review and organize the undergraduate portfolio materials.

Write a self-assessment of his/her achievements in relation to the goals and objectives of the major program, based upon the portfolio.

Submit a resume.

Meet with your project advisor and at least one other designated faculty member of the department to “defend” your portfolio before the oral presentation date.

Participate in the interview process such as a mock interview.

DEADLINES AND MEETINGS

Monday, August 25, 11:00am Mandatory Meeting! Meet with the group and all advisors to discuss the procedures of the senior project.

Tuesday, September 2 Submit topic proposal.

Monday, September 8 Compile and submit annotated bibliography.

Monday, September 15 Write and submit summaries and critiques. Submit portfolio, except for current courses, with table of contents. Write and submit self-assessment and resume.

Monday, September 29 Submit outline of major points of paper.

Monday, October 20 Submit a written progress report on your topic/research.

Monday, November 3 Write and submit draft of paper.

Monday, November 10 Receive response back from your advisor regarding your paper.

Monday, November 17 Submit second draft of paper (if needed).

Monday, November 24 Submit final paper.

December 11th or 12 (Thursday or Friday) - Presentations on the research topics will be held in Ryan 419– date/time to be determined. This meeting will be approximately 2-4 hours.

**Portfolio must be completed at this point in time, that is any artifacts from the current semester must be added to the portfolio folder along with the needed explanation of why that artifact was included.

Students and senior project advisors are expected to meet weekly at a mutually agreed upon day and time.

These percentage values may change per department’s recommendation.

When considering the grade to assign to the above areas, the senior advisor will consider the following:

Did the student:

Have depth, breadth, currency in his/her annotated bibliography?

Have clear summaries of resource materials and give points of defense in the critiques?

Have depth, breadth and clarity of research in his/her paper?

Have appropriate quantity and quality of original portion of research in the paper.

Have clear explanations, demonstrations, illustrations or defense (as appropriate) of his/her research topic from the paper in oral presentation?

Have a complete and organized portfolio?

Give a thorough self-assessment, as related to the major program goals and objectives?

Meet all deadlines, as noted in the syllabus.

POSSIBLE PENALTIES:

Unapproved late submission of a required item will result in loss of 20% credit per school day overdue.

Unexcused absence from a required meeting will result in loss of 20% of the points for the project item due at the meeting.

The paper, presentation, portfolio and self-assessment are all absolute requirements for majors to receive a passing grade in this course.

The paper and presentation are absolute requirements for non-majors in this course. Presentations will NOT be scheduled late.

PURPOSE OF SENIOR PROJECT AND PRESENTATION

The purpose of the Senior Project is for the student to demonstrate an understanding of a concept, its theory, history and application. This project could be a standard research paper, and/or a proposed project, such as developing an original computer game. The audience for the paper or project is the Math/Computer Science Department faculty, but should be understood to include any audience generally familiar with either mathematics and/or computer science. The student is expected to demonstrate that he/she is prepared to graduate from Fontbonne University with a B.S. in mathematics or computer science.

PAPER REQUIREMENTS

The paper should be minimally 15 – 20 pages in length. It should be double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and a 12-point font (Times New Roman is preferred). While no specific reference or citation system is required, please select either the MLA or APA format. A cover page and a table of contents can be used at your discretion. The paper should be written in an impersonal (third person) voice and should maintain a formal tone. Please be careful to not switch back and forth between first and third persons.

It is the student’s responsibility to keep abreast of such changes.
