PART 2 - WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT - An East Asia Map Transect (120 Points)

You should do the Module 6 Quiz (East Asia) BEFORE you do This Assignment

However, this assignment is now ready, so if you do this assignment before you take the quiz, you should not yet submit it. Instead, wait until you have finished the quiz and then take another look at this assignment before submitting it (or take it back and edit it after you have submitted it) before the due date.

image1 STEP 1 : Look at some of the articles posted on the WRGeography.com website:

East Asia articles

Note: You may need to refresh or reload your browser to get the stories to appear in the News Feed (RSS) side of the screen.

The purpose of this step is to give you an idea of some of the contemporary issues in these regions, to supplement the material in the textbook.

image2 STEP 2 : For this assignment you will Select Six (6) Cities from the following subregions of the East Asia:

Two (2) Cities from Mainland China (excluding Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau);

One (1) City from Mongolia or one of the Compatriot China Territories (comprising Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau);

One (1) Cities Northeast Asia (Japan, South Korea or North Korea);

Two (2) Additional Cities from any of these three subregions.

After you get a feel for these regions through the textbook and the news links above, you should select three countries/provinces (one from each subregion) that You Would MOST Like to Visit.

image3 STEP 3 : Draw a Line that connects your Six (6) places.

You may simply draw a straight line from one place/point to the next. Or, if you wish, you can draw a more complicated line that follows major transportation routes. In this assignment, the assumption is that you are flying from one place to the next.

Using one of the four mapping options below, you are to draw a line on a map of East Asia, starting at one city and moving through the other five, then returning to the start points. Save the map, and post a link to its URL in your paper. You should draw a straight line between each city/place point on your map.

You have Five Map Creation Options:

(1) Google Maps - My Maps - This is the recommended approach to create your map because it has the best instructions and tutorials. However, it does require that you have a Google account. The [More] button in Google Maps will give you some additional links to photos and articles about places on the map. Google Maps does not do 3-D terrain like Google Earth, but generally has more detailed resolution and you can save your maps for viewing in Google Earth ( instructions here ).

Click Here to view the Google My Maps Tutorial on YouTube .

Click Here for more the instructions on how to create a Google My Map.

(2) QuikMaps.com - Quikmaps (no "c") is more simple to use than Google Maps drawing and annotating tool, and it does not require that you have a Google account. Everything that you need to do for this assignment is available in QuickMaps. Note that to add text to your icons, click on the icon itself after you have placed it on the map. A box will then open and you can type in your text.

If you are somewhat technophobic, this may be the best option for you to use.

The Google My Map instructions video above will also be helpful for using Quikmaps.com.

You cannot email a link to your map within Quikmaps, like the others allow, but you can easily copy and paste it into an email.

Note that the maps come in two sizes -- select the URL for the larger sized map.

(3) Scribblemaps.com - This is a more powerful Google Maps sketching tool than Google My Map, and it does not require having a Google account (or any other account). Be sure to click on the Menu icon to save and send your map's URL to yourself.

The Google My Map instructions video above will also be helpful for using Scribblemaps.com.

(4) Google Earth - Google Earth requires downloading and installing the Google Earth program on your computer (PC or Mac). Images resolutions are generally not as clear as those in Google Maps, but you can do some very cool 3-D flyovers of the land (though this can also cause vertigo). Google earth includes links to videos and websites associated with locations on the earth and has numerous data layers that can be turned on and off.

If you are a Google Earth user, then feel free to use it for this assignment. I am not providing instructions on how to do this. It is not hard to do, but you need to figure it out yourself.

If you really want to get fancy, you might try the EarthPaint plugin for drawing on Google Earth.

(5) You can use any other tool that you have access to that will give you a terrain or satellite map with a straight line connecting your six places that can be linked tovia a URL in Bb-Learn - AND - allows you to save and send the map.

image4 STEP 4 :COPY the link to your map so you can post in your paper

Warning: This is probably NOT the link in your browser address bar.

The tools above provide a way to send a link to your email account. (Save the email for future reference.) Include this link in your paper so the grader can check it.

Quickmaps does not do this -- instead it provides you with a URL that you need to copy and email to yourself.

The link in Google My Maps is very long (those in Scribblemaps and Quickmaps are relatively short). If you are using Google My Maps, you are strongly encouraged to shorten it by using one of these websites:

snipr.com - bit.ly - is.gd - or any other similar site

Do Not Close Your Map webpage until you are certain that the URL that you copied works.

Try it in another tab or a different browser.

If your URL does not work, you may need to redo the map.

ALTERNATIVELY: You can do a Screen Capture and save the file (usually .jpg of .png) to your computer. You must then copy and paste the image to your paper.

If you do not know how to do a screen capture, ask someone or search online for instructions or utility programs.

image5 STEP 5 : Write a Description of Your Transect (100 points)

Based on Step 4, include either a working link (URL) to your map or an image capture of your map near the top of your paper.

You are not required to include any other multimedia (photos, videos, etc) in your paper..

Put your NAME at the top of your paper, then Write your Description following these guidelines: FIRST: Select the first city or place (of your six) where you want to start your Narrative.

Why did you select it? What made it interesting to you?

SECOND: Describe How the Map Shows your First City or Place and its surroundings (about 200 miles around the city/place)

Describe what you can see on the map.

Describe the major terrain features and color patterns on the map. Explain what these are.

Describe plains, hills, mountains, rivers, water bodies and anything else that looks interesting.

Google Earth includes a lot of information about places that you can use. - Turn on the "Satellite" or "Terrain" View.

You may supplement this information using any atlas that you have access to.

Here are links to some online atlases .

You may supplement this information using the Textbook, the WRGeography.com website , and any other sources that you have access to.

YOU MUST PROVIDE REFERENCE FOR SOURCES BEYOND THE TEXTBOOK AND THE WRGeography.com WEBSITE

Here are links to some tourist attraction sites that might be of interest

THIRD: Trace the line to your next place on the map.

Describe 2 to 4 interesting features that you either pass over or pass close to en route to your next destination.

For each, indicated what it is and list one interesting thing about it.

Consider:

Cities and other settlements, provinces and countries, and other human geography features

Water features, such as rivers, lakes, seas, and coastlines

Land and biogeography features, such as mountains, valleys, deserts, forests and jungles

FOURTH: Repeat these steps to describe your next city/place, and the following line after it.

Repeat these step until you return to your starting point.

image6 STEP 6 : Reflections on your results (20 points)

Answer this question using your Textbook and the information you collected in compiling your list of cities/places and transects:

How did your cities/places reflect the geography of East Asia overall, as discussed in the textbook? Add this below your description of cities/places and transects.

Specifically discuss the geographic patterns for both the following:

Physical Geography - mountains, coastlines, vegetation, etc.

Human Geography - cities, other settlements, roads and rail lines, etc.

For each of these (Physical and Human) you must specifically cite at three (3) items of information directly from the text that can be seen in the maps. (Last time you only did two items)

How is learning about geography from a map similar to and different from learning from a textbook?

What more can you add after this experience in comparison to the first map assignment that you did?

image7 STEP 7 : FORMATTING and Submitting Your Written Assignment

Do this assignment in a Word Processor and Save a Copy on your computer.Put your NAME at the Top Left of the paper.

Put a TITLE under your name that identifies this assignment.

Find the WORD COUNT and put it under the title.

Clearly indicate when you are changing topics, such as using headings to transition from one section to another, so that your paper can be more easily read for grading.

Please spell and grammar check your paper before submitting it.

Submit your assignment in MS WORD, .RTF or ASCII .TXT format through the SafeAssign link on the Learning Module menu. Go to the Learning Module for the First Half of the Class.

Look for a link at the top that says SafeAssign Assignments Submission link.

Click and submit to the correct Module number.

This submission uses SafeAssign, which will check your paper to make sure that you have answered the questions in your own words (and not copied from another source). You can put a draft paper in SafeAssign to check how well you did on this, before you submit your final paper.

You are expected to do your own work for this assignment. You may quote other sources, but do so sparingly -- the majority of text should be in your own words.

All copied text must be quoted (in quotation marks) and fully referenced in your paper, using any standard reference formats ( if unsure, use this format ). References to the Textbook may be less formal, just write "(Textbook: zz)" where zz is the page number.

Please note that it can take up to 24 hours (though it can also be instantaneous) before the SafeAssign provides you with an originality score.

Click Here if you get an Error Message when trying to access SafeAssign.

Please do not put any information that is requested in the Module papers into the "Header" (or "Footer") of your papers created using MS Word -- such as your name and the word count. This information will not appear in the "text" version that we use for grading in SafeAssign.

Verify that the paper was properly submitted.

If you have problems submitting your paper, contact the NAU HELP DESK Immediately: Flagstaff: 523-9294; Toll free: 1-888-520-7215

10% to 50% of your points will be deducted for assignments that are NOT PROPERLY FORMATTED or are DIFFICULT TO READ or DECIPHER -- the harder it is to read, the more points will be deducted.
