Raven Dior is Makenzie’s best-friend. They met while in foster girl all girls home, forced to be roommates, they grow closer than sisters and whoever said blood was thicker than water obviously have never experienced love. Raven shares a similar story as Makenzie. She was raped by her moms boyfriend when she was 13yrs old. What landed her in the system was her mother’s constant neglect. The school system called child protective service and they took her and her siblings away and separated them all. Now Raven is almost 18 and she is looking to take over the world with her friend Makenzie.
How does the time period influence your character’s physical appearance?
The time period is 2004 in the city of Detroit. The biggest fashion scene aside from Paris. Raven is a healthy, plus side girl, confident girl and she doesn’t let her weight control her wardrobe. She likes to be in tune to what is “in”. Her appearance is important because it confirms status and personality. She uses her clothes and hair to allude sexiness. Detroit is also a “show me state”. Your appearance is exactly who you are. Raven came from a damaging home on the eastside of town and she doesn’t want a reminder of that. She doesn’t want people to look at her and see struggle so she uses fashion to cover her flaws.
What questions do you have regarding the time period of your story? What do you need to research?
What I need to research is the city itself. I am very familiar with the area, but as I’m researching I’m finding out more things about the actually city that I wasn’t aware of, like the population. I need to research the statistics on female rape victims. I would like to actually inquire about mental and physical abuse in foster care. Not just from foster parents, but also the reports on social workers and counselor and the people who are suppose to protect these children. I want to research the procedure one must take to report abuse in the system and how it is handled or is it merely ignored until an investigation is completed. I would like to research drug cartel as well. I’m interesting in knowing how this type of movement can go on for so long under the nose of law enforcement before an arrest is made. Last, but not least I would like to research how a murder is handled. When the crime go unsolved in the first 48 hours approximately how long after a death do we closed their file.
