Nuclear Reactions
W8 Notes
Problem Assignment -
Problem 1 part d: Translate the bracket notation to standard form to solve. (see page 886 in textbook).
Problem 2,3, and 4, requires the use of the threshold energy formula (which can be derived from center of mass energy and momentum calculations), , where K(min) is the threshold energy needed because Q <0, and m is the mass of the initial lighter element or particle, M is the mass of the initial heavier element and Q is from the formula 31-2a on page 886 on the textbook. Also, problem 2 should have Be read B for Boron, NOT Beryllium.
Problem 5: Assume the initial KE of the neutron is small, aka, concern yourself only with rest mass when setting up Q equation.
1) Complete the follow nuclear reactions:

2) Consider the reaction

|
a) Use the masses of the nuclides involved to determine where it is endogenic of exoergic. b) If it is exoergic, find the amount of energy released, if it is exoergic find the threshold energy.
3) Find the threshold energy for the following reaction:

4) Find the threshold energy of the following reaction:

5) Calculate the energy released in the fission reaction:
