poverty
poverty is rising among our communities daily. poverty is known as a condition
of having little or no money and support poverty, is not an option.life is all about you and
making yourself happy while at the same time being very respectful and considerate of
other's needs and feelings as well. their are many ethical theories to approach and aid the
underprivileged and be considered a leader to the community and those in need. in which
some may agree more with one then they do the other; in which what they believe to be
morally correct in society. the three in which i will provide information about and state
which one i most agree with and the least and less likely the one i would agree with when
making ethical descion. the three ethical descions that will be discussed is utilitarianism
in which i believe to be the strongest approach towards poverty in creating the greatest
goods for the greatest amount of people. secondly virtue because I believe that people
should be in courage and believe that change will come. last but not least deontology
would be the least approach that i would be my least likely approach to aid the
underprivileged people.
Many people find utilitarianism to be an easy and useful approach to making
ethical decisions. When distributing goods, services, or even time, it would seem to be a
"no-brainer" to choose the option that would satisfy or please as many people as possible,
compared to any other available choice. However, philosophers have raised a number of
problems in response to utilitarianism, which may make it a less plausible ethical theory
than it first appears. (mosser,2013). utilitarianism is a great approach when is comes to
helping the underprivileged in which i would personally take this approach. If i can help
and any means necessary i would. such as sheltering as many people as i could. my all
time goal in life is to open a shelter for underprivileged teens. not only do i love helping
people but the smile that you see on others face when you give the unexpected.
utilitarianism is the better approach to poverty. simply because deontology focuses on
using others to achieve your goals. morally speaking why would you want to use
someone who has nothing and is looking to get to where you are it just simply don't make
since. while on the other hand virtue is giving one courage to move on in life.
Virtue ethics is an approach to moral and ethical questions that focuses on a
person's character.( mosser,2013). However, the classic conception of virtue ethics in
Western philosophy is attributed to Aristotle. For Aristotle, the virtuous person, or the
person of virtuous character, is someone who has admirable characteristics and displays
them in a way that is balanced and harmonious. This person seeks to have an ideal
character, and the virtues that contribute to this goal will all be appropriately related to
each other. (Mosser,2013). virtue ethics has great points, i choose this as my second
approach because, I my self am a very positive person. I try to see the good and every
situation good or bad. i believe that experience is the best teacher. as a child every time
my mom would tell me not to do something, i would do it intentionally because when i
would ask why her response would be because i said so. me being who i am i wanted to
know why. and the answer she would give me just wasn't good enough. with that being
said virtue ethics put's me in the mind of reactions. in order to do better you have to know
what it is that you did wrong. virtue ethics is morally accepting things and having faith.
believing that things would get better. that was my point of experience is the best teacher.
you only learn from your mistakes. your past does not define you; but it is your character
to whom that makes you who you are. Virtue ethics differs from utilitarianism and
deontology in that it examines not what a person does, but what kind of character he or
she has.
last but not least, deontology. Deontological ethics is usually associated with the
philosopher Immanuel Kant. Deontology comes from the Greek word for "obligation"
(or"duty"). In contrast to consequentialist theories, Kant, and more generally the
deontologist, ignores an act's consequences when evaluating whether it is a good, bad, or
morally neutral act. It is important to remember that deontologists do not deny that acts
have consequences; their point is that those consequences should not play a role in
evaluating the act's morality. Rather, deontological ethics focuses on the will of the
person acting, the person's intention in carrying out the act, and particularly, the rule
according to which the act is carried out. Deontology focuses on the duties and
obligations one has in carrying out actions rather than on the consequences of those
actions. (Mosser, 2013). deontology would be my last descion when it come to
underprivileged. no I am not saying it is okay for the underprivileged to robe, steal, and
kill. because no good will come from it. but what I am saying is that I don’t believe that
they have all the appriete resources they should have to live therefor this is what they do
why do they do it because they feel as though this is the only way for them to survive and
take care of their family and this is their only means of providing for their family.
because they have no education they have no qualification for jobs. their for they have
nothing but the government. there are tons of ways that I feel as though the government
could improve such as offering free programs and activities to children and offering free
educational traing classes to put the families back to work and decrease
poverty.Traditionally, critics of deontology have focused on two specific but related
issues. First, deontology particularly the Kantian version seems too sterile and fails to
capture some of the complex issues that arise when we confront ethical problems in real
life. The second issue(which may be a result of the first) is that deontology may require
one to act in a way that seems obviously wrong and unethical. As we saw with
utilitarianism, any ethical theory that leads to potentially unethical results is problematic.
(Mosser, 2013).
to conclude, ethical theories are based off of one's characteristics and or how one
carries himself in life. their were three ethical theories that I have chosen to study was
utilitarianism in which was created by John Stuart Mill and the meaning is to act in a
good manner and perform the greatest good for the greater number of people in so many
words, utilitarianism is about majority rules. utilitarianism was my first pick for the topic
that I choose to write about because I believe that when it comes to poverty. any and
everyone should be willing to help. my reason being is to decrease the poverty rates in
America. and if Utilitarianism is set to create the greatest good for the greater amount of
people than this is what we need because there are more people in poverty than there is
wealthy. the second ethical theory that I choose to write about is virtue ethics in which
the creator is Aristotle and the purpose of virtue ethics is the person virtuous character in
so many word this means that if a person is determined to change then why not give them
a second chance. many people that live in poverty, life don't come easy in what I mean
when I say that everyone should be given a chance at life. nobody asked to be here on
earth and everyone was not born into riches. many people that live in poverty they dream
to be better they live to better their selves in life but how can they better their self when
their is no funds to pay for school and on top of they how can school pay their bills today.
that's how many of the people feel I have family that look up to me and admire what I am
doing. no I may not be good at everything that I do but there is one thing that I make sure
I do. and that is my best at any and everything that I set out to do and pray for the best
results. lastly I choose deontology in whom this one was created by Immanue l Kant this
was my least admirable one because it justifies that it's okay for one to act out as long as
they have great reason behind so. this one relates well to poverty and I don't approve of it
non what so ever. I understand doing what you have to do to support your family. but to
me doing what you have to do is going out and giving your best at what ever it is that you
so every choose. while others believe illegal acts are okay because at the end of the day
you are proving for your family. my question is how can you provide when the only three
things that illegal things will do to you is leave you dead or in jail?
