Assignment completed by trustedwriter2014
At the next lab meeting, you will participate in a scientific symposium. You will work in groups to develop a cohesive presentation to present to your fellow science 101Lab colleagues. Genetics research is quit controversial (some areas far more controversial than others) it will be each groups job to highlight some of the controversies shedding some light into both pro- and con- sides of their topics.
You were assigned into to groups.
The first 4-6 presenters will have the responsibility of explaining what “genetically modified” means and how scientists genetically modify: Plants, Animals, and People. They should cover how genetic manipulation occurs via gene splicing (mention sticky versus blunt ends and how they are formed), bacterial plasmid transformation, and particle gun transformation,
The topic GM Research in Plants will cover the positives and negatives in the controversial topic of GM crops (Monsanto Corporation is a good starting point). This also implies the ‘safety’ of eating GM foods (pro’s and con’s). Another controversy of GM crops is the environmental impact (pro’s and con’s). There are also medicinal crops (banana’s that work as vaccines).
The GM Research in Animals will cover the positives and negatives in the controversial topic of GM animals (like salmon, cows, pigs, chicken, etc.) that are ingested by people. There are also several other types of GM animals (like glowing monkeys). GM animals are constantly being used in research (mice. rats, flies, etc.) that are helping researchers learn more about genetic diseases (this is less controversial, but is still good to know and cover in your seminar).
The GM Research in Humans is probably the most controversial topic. I would like you to cover topics such as gene therapy treatments, genetic modification of pluripotent stem cells, genetically modified babies, and human genetic engineering (each of these topics have pro’s and con’s).
At the end of each group’s seminar presentation there will be a few moments for questions, comments and inquiry.
You will be graded on:
(8pts) Your Preparation Notes (which is found in your lab notebook)
Are important topics covered?
How well do you know what you are presenting?
(6pts) Your Groups Seminar Presentation
Did your group flow together? Did you fall in the correct time frame?
Was each topic adequately covered during your seminar?
(4pts) Your OWN contribution to the seminar
Were you prepared?
How well did your speaking segment blend with the groups?
Was there repeated information?
(4pts) Your Question (which MUST be asked for credit)
Did you ask your Question?!?!
(3pts) Your Groups Ability to Field Questions
Does your group know the topic enough to field simple questions?
Does your group show enthusiasm during discussion of a topic?
(25pts) TOTAL
