Theme: Analysis and understanding the significance of the Roman House or Domus in Antiquity

This assignment is divided into two parts:

Part 1: You are to analyze and critique the chapter by Paul Zanker entitled, “The Roman House as Theater of the Joys of Life.” Roman Art, 2008.

• In presenting the chapter you will need to provide a detailed discussion, which includes the author’s thesis, and what you feel are other significant points of observation. You should quote from the chapter a minimum of two (2) times to highlight your analysis.

Part 2: You are to visit the following website about The House of Vettii located in Pompeii, Italy.

After reviewing the website and reading Paul Zanker’s chapter, you are to provide an analysis in which you argue about how the home conveys a message about Roman culture. Describe the home’s décor, architecture, and occupants of the home. Identify how the home expresses power, status, and intellectual life of the people who lived there. On the website, click on the tab “The House in Detail.” To the left of the page, click on one of the four colored regions for information about specific rooms. Specifically, discuss one of the regions of the Roman House and its importance.

Important: For this assignment, you are composing a formal essay: your paper should have an introduction, body and conclusion. For help with this assignment, you may wish to consult the College’s Writing Center.

Outside information that you quote directly or information that is not “common knowledge” (what you glean from the museum, your textbook and class lectures) must be cited in the proper MLA format. The mere inclusion of a “Works Cited” page or bibliography is not acceptable. Failure to include citations within the body of your paper will result in a failing grade for this assignment. Please follow these guidelines for writing your paper:

1. Type your paper in Times New Roman with 12-point font.

2. Ensure that your paper is no longer than four pages in length. Double-spaced with one-

inch margins. (Do not use extra spaces between paragraphs.)

3. Indent paragraphs five spaces.

4. Make a cover page with a scanned image of an artwork you include in your discussion.

Make sure to identify the artwork’s title and date when possible.

5. When you refer to a work of art for the first time in your paper, give the artist’s name, if

known, full title, date, and the museum collection it is in. After that you can abbreviate

the title. Works of art should be italicized or underlined.

6. You may cite your Gardner’s text as sources for your Work Cited page. Make sure to

follow the MLA guidelines. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable source for your Works

Cited.

7. I will give a total of 10 extra credit points if you present your paper to your classmates

during the final week of class. This will be a great opportunity to develop your public

speaking skills and to share what you have learned.

8. Take advantage of the LAVC Writing Center on campus to have someone review your

essay before you present and submit your paper.
