Assignment Overview This writing assignment reminds you of the process to use to select a topic and determine the specific purpose and main points for a speech.

Deliverables

· A one-page document (12-point font, about 300 words) written in a word processor, such as MS Word

Assignment Details In this activity, you will select a topic for your informational speech. Limit the scope of your topic based on the idea that you can present the actual speech in four to seven minutes.  Perform the following tasks:

Step 1: Review the information presented in the lesson that explores informative speeches. In particular, focus on the goals of informative speeches, principles of effective informative speeches, and types of informative speeches.  Step 2: Select a topic that fits into one of the categories of informative speeches: description, definition, or demonstration. Step 3: Review the information in Lesson 4 of the course about creating a specific purpose statement and thesis, deriving a question based on the thesis, and using the question to determine the main points to cover in the speech.  Consider reviewing the documents you created for assignments 4.1: Developing Purpose and Thesis Statements and 4.2: Get to the Point.  Step 4: In a word processing document for this assignment, determine and enter the following information about your topic:

· Description of the audience for your speech (you get to define your audience)

· Topic

· Specific purpose

· Thesis

· Question based on thesis

· Three to five main points

Step 5: Save and submit your document. When you have completed the assignment, save a copy for yourself in an easily accessible place and submit a copy to your instructor using the drop box.
