Course Assignment - Part 2

1. The Purpose of This Course Assignment

On successful completion of this course assignment, students will be able to:

a) Use the research and analysis information to support the design process.

b) Present the chosen design solution.

2. Scenario Outline

The Board of Four Dragons (“the Client”) decides to develop two hotels in Kowloon District and

New Territories respectively and appoints Project Management Consultancy Company Limited as

Project Manager to overall manage his two proposed hotel development in Kowloon District and

New Territories respectively. The Project Manager is an experienced project management

professional in particular modern and sustainable hotel development.

3. Tasks

Assume that you have been appointed as the design and construction consultant to the Client.

The Project Manager intends to ensure your ability in design and construction of modern and

sustainable hotel. Thus, he instructs you to produce a design proposal that demonstrate adequate

effort is inputted during the early design stage.

The design proposal should:

1. The Client expects current issues, practices and modern method of construction are researched

in the design process. Therefore, you are required to present evidence of such research in your

proposal. [P3.1]

2. Other than research of current issues, practices and modern method of construction, you are

also required to perform analytical techniques to support the design process. [3.2]

3. As one of the hotel developments is located at the busiest part of Kowloon District, the Client

is afraid that the traffic condition and environmental issues will affect the work progress. To

ensure the project meets the scheduled target date, you are asked to propose a construction

method to the super-structure to meet the Client’s need. [4.1]

4. To persuade the Client to adopt your proposed construction method, you are required to

develop a presentation to the peers and assessors. [4.2]

Each assignment shall be awarded a level of grade ‘Pass’, ‘Merit and “Distinction”.

In order to pass this module, the assignment should cover the above tasks (P1 to P9). This

assignment also offers opportunities to provide evidence for the following Merit (M1 to M3) and

Distinction (D1 to D3) grading criteria. You must ensure your evidence for M & D grades is clear

and explicit.

Merit grade

M1 identify and apply strategies to find appropriate solutions

- effective judgments have been made

- complex problems with more than one variable have been explored

- an effective approach to study and research has been applied

M2 select/design and apply appropriate methods/techniques

- relevant theories and techniques have been applied

- a range of methods and techniques have been applied

- a range of sources of information has been used

- the selection of methods and techniques/sources has been justified

- the design of methods/techniques has been justified

- complex information/data has been synthesized and processed

- appropriate learning methods/techniques have been applied

M3 present and communicate appropriate findings

- the appropriate structure and approach has been used

- coherent, logical development of principles/concepts for the intended audience

- a range of methods of presentation have been used and technical language has been

accurately used

- communication has taken place in familiar and unfamiliar contexts

- the communication is appropriate for familiar and unfamiliar audiences and

appropriate media have been used

Distinction grade

D1 use critical reflection to evaluate own work and justify valid conclusions

- conclusions have been arrived at through synthesis of ideas and have been justified

- the validity of results has been evaluated using defined criteria

- self-criticism of approach has taken place

- realistic improvements have been proposed against defined characteristics for success

D2 take responsibility for managing and organizing activities

- autonomy/independence has been demonstrated - substantial activities, projects or investigations have been planned, managed and

organized

- activities have been managed - the unforeseen has been accommodated - the importance of interdependence has been recognized and achieved
