Emergency Response Plan
The Emergency Response Plan for a machinery accident will address the potential dangers this type of incident poses. When an accident occurs as the result of machinery it is essential for the employees at Honda to understand what steps need to be taken and what would be the immediate response. Machines are a natural hazard that can cause all types of dangers to the worker (STANTEC, 2014). These injuries can be minor and come in the forms of cuts or bruises but in extreme occasion it can result in sprain, breaks, or even loss of limb.
OSHA requires all business be prepared for an emergency. This includes establishing emergency plans, training workers on the plan, providing personal protective equipment, and engaging in organized response operations (OSHA, 2014). The response that is created must be coordinated amongst workers in the business and if the emergency is large then a coordinated effort amongst first responders and emergency personnel.
In the event of an emergency with a machine the following steps must be followed:
1. The first step is to shut of the machine. All workers that use the machine that caused the accident must be trained on shutting of the machine. The machinery at Honda is large and heavy and can cause untold damage to a worker. Shutting of the machine will prevent further damage to the worker and prevent any further injury to other workers. All machines should have an emergency shutdown.
2. Secondly or simultaneously the injury to the worker must be addressed. For small wound the first aid kit will be used. The wound will be cared for by trained personnel. In more serious events a call will be made to medical services to immediately respond to the injured worker. Trained medical personnel will care for the wounded worker until the emergency responders can arrive on scene.
3. Next or as soon as medical personnel are called, Honda security should be contacted in order to assist the workers in dealing with the incident if it is an accident requiring a medical response. Honda Security consists of personnel that are medically trained to deal with accidents. Honda security is trained to respond to emergency situations and can help keep the incident under control.
4. Once the accident is addressed with the worker and inspection of the machinery must be conducted and an investigation as to how the accident occurred. If it worker error that caused the accident the worker may require additional training but if it is the fault of the machine this will need to be immediately addressed.
5. When an incident requires the injured worker to receive medical attention a report will be filed. The report will be filed with the department head and security officers (). This report will be used to provide a detailed description of the incident and the response that was needed. Detailed reporting is required especially if the worker will require long term medical care and time off work. The report will detail the incident leading to the accident as well as provide a description of the medical steps that were taken.
6. Supervisor of the injured worker should follow up if medical care was needed for the worker.
Hazard Evacuation Plan
Large machinery used to build automobiles can be extremely dangerous even deadly. When a machine malfunctions or if an accident happens due to worker error the first step is to stop the machine in order to stop the threat to the injured worker. If the machine will not stop posing a threat to other workers other steps will need to be taken to ensure the safety of other workers that work on or near the machine.
1. The first step is to develop evacuation policy and procedures surrounding any incident that occurs in the manufacturing plant. Some incidents will require an immediate and uniform response such as in a fire and in the release of toxic gases or fumes. In the case of a machinery malfunction that leads to the potential harm of others and evacuation policy must also be established.
2. Once the evacuation policies have been established a specific plan of each incident must be developed. In the case of malfunctioning machinery the machine must be shut off and workers fifty feet or less from the machine evacuated. When a large piece of machinery malfunctions at the Honda plant it can cause a rippling effect. For example if a machine malfunctions and electrocutes the worker, other workers in the vicinity could also be harmed (STANTEC, 2014). They must be evacuated.
3. Once the evacuation policy is established and the evacuation plan created the employees must be trained. When an incident occurs employees do not always automatically know how to respond. This is what training is for. The Honda plant will conduct drills allowing the worker to get used to the response that is expected in the event of an emergency. For example for the machinery malfunction the machine will be shut off and workers that work the machine and machine close to the malfunctioning machine will evacuate the area until a determination can be made about the machine.
4. Once the machine is shut off and workers evacuated an assessment will be conducted of the machine to determine if it was in fact machine malfunction or if the problem was worker error. If the machine was at fault the necessary repairs will be made before workers will be allowed to go back to working on the machine. The machines used at the Honda manufacturing plant or complex and large. It will take time to assess the machine and if problems are found to replace or fix the problems. The machinery cannot be used without first be fully operational and after a safety inspection has been conducted. All safety inspection must be OSHA standards.
5. A report must be written about the incident informing stakeholders of the problem and the steps taken to address the problem. The report will provide a detailed description of the incident and information about what measures were taken to address the problem with the machinery or if human error, the worker. The report will also address what went wrong with the machine and how it was fixed. If the machine was not at fault the error made by the worker will covered in detail.
6. The evacuation process must be addressed to determine its effectiveness during the incident. If the process was flawed changes must be made. If the accident was the result of worker error the worker must receive additional training.
