Case Study Media Box – exploiting intellectual property o Media Box is a new venture which aims to provide a service to allow customers to
download text, music and video to their home PC, TV or hi-fi. Subscribers receive a free electronic ‘media box’ and connection, and pay a monthly fee plus a fee per download.
o The media box is based on a new type of microprocessor developed by two researchers at Imperial College, and includes embedded software to code, compress and if necessary to convert digital signals to analogue form. This allows transmission through conventional telephone lines, rather than competing cable and ISDN-based services.
