In the first unit you learned how to write using the Rule of Three analytical style. In the second unit you learned how to analyze and use primary documents. In the third unit you added the the idea of change over time, which involves critical thinking. In this discussion you will put it all together and learn how to brainstorm and concept map (which is useful in organizing an assigned essay). If you do not know what a concept map is, here is a useful website; and here is another useful website. You are not required to make a concept map, but it may prove useful to you as you work on this discussion assignment and Reaction 4. In this discussion, I want you to think about how to best organize an essay. The steps to writing an essay are: Understand what the prompt is asking Do some brainstorming Determine the key concepts you will be discussing in your essay (which will make up your thesis statement) Decide upon the evidence you will use to support your arguments concerning the key concepts. Outline your essay Finally, write up your essay using Rule of Three In this discussion, you are working on steps 1-4, both individually and as a group. You WILL NOT write an essay in this discussion. __________________________________ Imagine that I have assigned an essay (again, DO NOT WRITE AN ESSAY) on the following prompt: How did the tactics used in the struggle for civil rights change over the first seven decades of the 20th century? How would you organize your essay? STEP 1: Individual Post After doing some brainstorming, decide upon the three key concepts that you would want to discuss in your essay (DO NOT WRITE AN ESSAY). These three concepts would be listed in your thesis statement. Each of the concepts would then have its own paragraph in the body of your essay. In the initial post, I want you to list your key concepts (be clear and concise) and provide ONE piece of historical evidence you would use in your analysis of this concept. Your entry should look something like this: CONCEPT 1: one sentence describing the concept EVIDENCE 1: one piece of evidence you would use in your analysis of the concept with a brief explanation of how it supports your concept (1-2 sentences ONLY) CONCEPT 2: one sentence describing the concept EVIDENCE 2: one piece of evidence you would use in your analysis of the concept with a brief explanation of how it supports your concept (1-2 sentences ONLY) CONCEPT 3: one sentence describing the concept EVIDENCE 3: one piece of evidence you would use in your analysis of the concept with a brief explanation of how it supports your concept (1-2 sentences ONLY) Only books as reference!!! • Jones, et al.
