Appendix C
Example of Storybook-Based Language Observation: (See page 255 of Digital Book to find information about the value of shared book reading observations.)
Step One: Pick one child from the video and use a fictitious name. In column one record exactly what the child says in the video. Put your cursor at the end of the word “Here” and click the tab key to add another row. At the end of each row, add another one in the same manner until you have completed your observation.
Step Two: Get a copy of the book and record what the book actually says. You can find the book in your local library.
Step Three: Use the knowledge you have learned about shared reading skills to analyze the child’s performance. You can also research and use other resources to gain additional knowledge about shared book reading skills. Be sure to share a reference on the reference page to any resources you find.
Step Four: Use this information to write the purpose of video observations including the advantages and disadvantages of a video recorded observation. Keep in mind that this is practice in completing one observation, but in the classroom you would want to do at least three observations over a period of time. (See your Digital Book on pages 349).
