Data Exercise 3:

Please complete both parts of this assignment.

Go to the website for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve (http://www.federalreserve.gov/). Click on “Economic Research & Data” at the top middle of the page. Under “data releases” toward the middle of the page, click on “Money Stock Measures- H.6”.

Write a one page, double-spaced essay analyzing the data. Be sure to answer the following questions: What is M1 and what is M2? What have been the trends in the movement of these components in the past year (percentage increase or decrease)? What about in the past three months? (this information is listed at the bottom of the first chart). Some economists prefer to measure inflation using money stock measures rather than CPI. If you use this data, is the country currently experiencing inflation or deflation? Does this match your conclusions from your analysis of CPI?

Go to the website for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), specifically the World Economic Outlook on Globalization and Inflation. This is an example link: (http://www.imf.org/external/Pubs/ft/weo/2014/01/). However, you may want to search for a more recent WEO in their database. They are normally released in April and September each year. Once there, scroll down and click on "Statistical Appendix". Click on "List of Tables Part A. When you open the PDF, scroll down to Table A5 "Summary of Inflation".

Create a chart showing the inflation rates for the past 5 years and for the projection years for the United States and two other areas of your choice (example: Emerging Economies, Japan, Euro Area, etc). Write a one page, double-spaced essay analyzing the data. What has been the trend in inflation for the United States? What about the other areas which you have chosen to analyze? Does this information match your view of the economy? Is inflation higher or lower for the United States than the other areas you have chosen to analyze? Does this match your view of the global economy? Is the US economy doing “better” or “worse” than other areas of the world? Please feel free to expand by incorporating your own opinion.
