MAT 117: College Algebra

Course Information

Course Description

Welcome to College Algebra! The purpose of this course is to develop skills in linear and

quadratic functions, general polynomial functions, rational functions, and exponential and

logarithmic functions. You will also study systems of linear equations. We will emphasize

problem-solving techniques, specifically by means of discussing concepts in each of these

topics.

Course Objectives

 Students will be able to apply algebraic reasoning to solve a range of problems.

 Students will develop skills required for success in future studies in calculus.

Prerequisites

 Pass MAT 110 (with a C or better) or completion of the ALEKS Math Placement Test

with a score of 40% or higher or completed MAT 194: EFM with skills mastered for

MAT 117.

Course Materials & Structure

Textbook

You are not required to purchase a textbook for this course. Reading materials will be

provided online in each lesson as pdf chapters. Practice problems with solutions are also

provided through the left menu under course home.

If you would like to purchase a hard copy, this is the text: College Algebra; 9th Edition by

Michael Sullivan, ISBN 978-0-321-71681-1.

Calculator

A graphing calculator (such as the TI-83/84) is required. You are expected to bring your

calculator to class daily. Cellular phone calculators are not permitted in class or

during an exam. Also, the sharing of calculators is not permitted during exams.

Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those that do symbolic algebra, such as the Casio FX2, Casio 9970Gs, TI-89,or TI-92 cannot be used in class or during an exam.

Study Plan Mastery Points: 20% of your grade

Your Study Plan is personalized by adaptive algorithms in MyMathLab. You are expected to

read the textbook and watch the lecture video for each lesson before starting on the Study

Plan practice problems. When you finish practicing, take the Quiz to assess your

understanding. If you get more than 70% on the Quiz, you earn the Mastery Points and will

continue on to the next lesson. If you fail, you can do more practice problems and take the

Quiz as often as needed until you pass.

Your grade for Mastery Points will be equal to the percentage of the total which you

complete. You may work on the lessons in your Study Plan to earn Mastery Points until the

last day of class, but we strongly recommend you complete all related lessons in a unit

before you take that exam.

Keeping up (labeled “participation” in the gradebook) 5% of your grade.

After each Friday, starting Friday July 4, we record your participation score for that week.

If you are current in your Mastery Points, as listed in the weekly schedule below, you

receive the full 10 participation points for that week. For each Mastery Point you are

deficient, however, you will lose one participation point for that week. (But the participation

score cannot be less than zero for participation for a week.) This means that keeping up

with the schedule earns you free participation points. But once you lag behind the schedule,

catching up is extremely difficult because of the very fast pace of this course, and you

instead tend to lose participation points week after week.

Problem sets 15% of your grade

The problem sets are found under Units A, B, C, and D. By noon on the dates listed on

the weekly schedule later in this syllabus, each student is expected to complete and submit

to the dropbox (in PDF form) each problem set assigned for that date. All the problem sets

in a unit should be completed and submitted to the dropbox before taking the unit exam.

Download the problem sets, work on them, then scan them with a scanner, You may also

take a picture of the completed problem set with your phone, upload this picture to your

computer, change the picture format to PDF, and then submit this file to the drop box. There

are 6 problem sets for you to complete. All problem sets together are 15% of your course

grade

Exams 60% of your grade

You will take three unit exams during the semester according to the dates listed below. You

should complete all the sections in a unit including practice exam/PrepQuiz and then take

the unit exam. If you keep up with the fast pace of the course, you will be able to meet

these deadlines. Each exam will involve a mix of mechanical skills and conceptual

reasoning. No exam scores will be dropped. Each PrepQuiz is worth 2% of your final grade

and is designed to help you prepare for the corresponding exam. Each midterm exam is

worth 10% of your final grade. The final exam is worth 22% of your final grade. You must

complete and submit each Prep Quiz at least once so that each midterm exam password

will appear for you right above the Exam link for that unit. Hint: Work ahead. Then you

may complete each PrepQuiz multiple times to gain the highest score on it and be

better prepared for each exam. Students who complete each PrepQuiz several times are

better prepared for and score higher on the exams than do students who only complete a

PrepQuiz once. The unit exams will be given online using the Pearson LockDown browser.

The final exam must be proctored. It may be taken in any of the Computer Testing Labs on

the ASU campuses in Maricopa County free of charge (but you need to schedule a time at

www.studentsuccess.asu.edu). Or you may pay an extra fee to take the final exam online

from proctoru.com. (You must have webcam and microphone in your computer and good

internet connection. And you should complete your final exam at least a day early to avoid

delays that sometimes happen.) Even with ProctorU, you are still proctored during your

final exam. If you plan to schedule your final exam with ProctorU, go to proctoru.com, register with

them, and sign up for Session C: ASU’s MAT 117 final exam (the one with no instructor

listed). Also you must EMAIL ME AT LEAST 3 DAYS BEFORE YOUR FINAL EXAM DATE

to tell me that you want to use ProctorU. I then need to change how you access our course.

Unless you inform me early enough that you want to use ProctorU, you CANNOT use

ProctorU. (The computer system won’t allow you to take your final exam through ProctorU

unless I make a change and you make 3 changes.)

Course Expectations & Student Resources

Course Expectations

 You are expected to complete a minimum of 2 sections per week (4 sections in a 7.5

week format) as outlined on the course schedule.

 Over the course of the semester, you are expected to remain “On Track” as designated

by your instructor. Students who are “Off Track” by the day/time designated by your

instructor may receive a loss of points for your participation grade.

 Our weekly class meeting for problem solving is not the only time you should be working

on the course content. Since this is a hybrid course, a majority of your work will be

done online outside of the classroom. You are expected to spend at least 6 hours per

week outside of our scheduled class meeting to access the course content in the

computer lab or your personal computer.

Student Resources / Computer Lab

 Your primary resource for tutoring is the computer lab. During non-class and non-

testing times, tutors will be available to answer questions for you regarding the course

content. You can also visit the Student Success Center. Specific hours for when a MAT

117 tutor is available at the Student Success Center can be found on their webpage at:

http://studentsuccess.asu.edu.

 If you own a laptop computer, you are encouraged to bring it with you to the computer

lab when you are working on course content or taking an exam.

 The Technology Studio can check your laptop or personal computer free of charge to

make sure you are ready to access all the course content from your computer. If you

choose to use your laptop for exams, the Technology Studio will also assist you in

installing the secure browser required for testing.

 The highest standards of academic integrity are expected of all students at all times.

Conduct

Students are required to adhere to the behavior standards listed in the

 Arizona Board of Regents Policy Manual Chapter V – Campus and

 ASU Student Academic Integrity Policy.

Students are entitled to receive instruction free from interference by other

members of the class. If a student is disruptive, an instructor may ask the student to stop the disruptive behavior and warn the student that such

disruptive behavior can result in withdrawal from the course. An instructor may withdraw a student from a course when the student's behavior disrupts

the educational process under USI 201-10.

Appropriate classroom behavior is defined by the instructor. This includes the number and length of individual messages online. Course discussion

messages should remain focused on the assigned discussion topics. Students must maintain a cordial atmosphere and use tact in expressing differences of

opinion. Inappropriate discussion board messages may be deleted if an

instructor feels it is necessary. Students will be notified privately that their posting was inappropriate.

Student access to the course Send Email feature may be limited or removed

if an instructor feels that students are sending inappropriate electronic messages to other students in the course.
