Career Focus Assignment – 10 Marks

Overview : This assignment relates to material covered in the career development lectures and/or Topic 8B: Career Focus (in the course website), as well as your follow-up work. The assignment requires that you complete TWO tasks.

Assignment Task 1: Career Options Worksheet (3 marks)

This activity requires you to analyse information related to a Griffith Business School major. You may wish to review the majors applicable to your degree by selecting Degrees and Courses on the Griffith home page and following the links to your degree program.

Assignment Task 1: Complete the Career Options Worksheet provided in your Course Handbook. You will need to analyse the set of resources provided (job advertisements, job descriptions and career options articles) for the major you select.

Assignment Task 2: Field Research (Workplace Interviews) and Future Career Plans (6 marks)

Conduct your Field Research:

The field research (workplace interview) task requires you to explore career issues in detail for the major you selected for Task 1. You may either (a) conduct your own workplace interview (field research) OR (b) listen to a recorded interview on Learning@Griffith

Option (a):

If you select option (a), conducting your own workplace interview, you should:

· Pick a role related to the major you chose for Task 1.

· Identify a person in that field.

· Conduct a 20-minute interview with the person about the nature of their role.

· Complete the Workplace Interview Report Sheet (available on Learning@Griffith).

[*Remember, it is also courteous to send an email or letter of thanks to the person. A sample letter/email is provided on Learning@Griffith].

Option (b):

If you select option (b) listening to a recorded interview, you should also complete the Workplace Interview Report Sheet (available on Learning@Griffith).

Regardless of whether you choose option (a) or (b), pay attention to the following:

· the roles and duties the person undertakes and what is really involved in the job on a day-to-day basis

· potential career paths and strategies or tips for getting started in the field

Assignment Task 2: Write 500 words on what you learned from your field research (workplace interview), career development lecture and from reviewing the web resources and consider the insights you have gained. Discuss what you have learned from the Career Focus topic including:

· What insights you gained from conducting field research or listening to workplace interviews.

· What you learned from the career development component as a whole (lecture, field research/workplace interview, web resources etc).

· What you need to do up until the time of your expected graduation (career plan) to position yourself for graduate employment.

Presentation of your assignment (1 mark)

· Your completed assignment should include the following:

1. Completed Career Options Worksheet (Task 1)

2. Workplace Interview Report Sheet (Task 2)
