Part I: Case Study

Directions: Channon Christian and Chris Newson Investigation. Review the three (3) YouTube videos in the Module 2 Lecture Notes under the Case Study section (Please note that there are many others related to the trial testimony, etc., included on YouTube if you choose to learn more about the trial testimony as well as other details of these horrible crimes). In addition, research additional information about these murders via the internet and/or other YouTube videos.

  • Provide a Timeline of the crime (taking field notes).

Summarize the details of the crime (gathering information).

There were accusations of this being a hate crime by many race related groups and activists. Do you believe this crime was a hate crime? Why or why not?

Do you believe Latalvis Cobbins’ version of events? Why or why not? Do you believe his testimony was rehearsed with his defense attorney? Why or why not?

What is the impact of having to retry these defendants on the victim’s families?

Do you believe the original Judge should be charged with a crime for abusing drugs while making decisions that impact people’s lives throughout the daily course of his job? What are your thoughts on the ethical implications of this behavior?

Part II: Investigative Project

Directions: You will work on the following Investigative Project throughout the length of the course and will submit your final work in Module 8.

Contact your local or state law enforcement agency and conduct a phone interview (you will need to call ahead of time and schedule this due to professional courtesy and the fact that law enforcement are very busy). Tell them you are a student at Allied American University and request to schedule a telephone interview (at their convenience) with either a current or past Undercover Police Officer. The following questions are required for your project; however, you should also include at least five (5) appropriate criminal investigation based questions. Be sure not to ask anything that would jeopardize their undercover position (if currently undercover).

  • What is your role in investigating drug offenses? What do you actually do?

Can you explain who would be a good candidate for undercover work?

How do handle the request or demand to “do” drugs prior to a drug transaction? Does your department allow simulation?

How do you choose your investigative targets?

How do you deal with informants?

  • Where do they come from?

Who are they (not names)?

How are they controlled?

What motivates them?

Can you do your job without them?

  • How much paperwork is there in the job?

Do you testify?

Can you give examples of several cases (or types of cases) that you have worked on?

What are the goals of your investigation? How long is the typical investigation?

How many buys do you consummate with an individual prior to arrest?

What (if any) issues with entrapment do you see as a challenge to your activities?

Are you armed when you are working undercover? Why or why not?
