Umbrella Revolution
September, 26, 2014 in HK central courtyard, thousands of Hong Kong citizens gathered to protest Chinese suppression and control. Demonstrators already occupied central courtyard and they spread gradually. In such a situation, China government spoke their mind which they never will dispute every inch of ground and they suppressed Hong Kong demonstrators by using pepper spray and tear gas. Against the oppression, Hong Kong demonstrators opened their umbrella for protect themselves. Moreover, this revolution called umbrella revolution.
Hong Kong revolution is not just short-term issue. Back in time 1997, Hong Kong was retroceded from United Kingdom to China. In the process of retrocession, China concluded several conventions and one of the conventions was grant autonomy to Hong Kong government. However, this convention has not observed, so the rift between Hong Kong and China has continually deepened. Decisive reason that Hong Kong people resist to China government was election process of administration minister in Hong Kong. For the last 50 years, Hong Kong administration minister has been elected by election committee which consists of 80 percent of Chinese. Hong Kong citizens have protested against this issue. As the result, China government announced that they will accept Hong Kong citizens demand and they will change method of an election of administration minister to direct election. However, the convention which China government announced was not normal direct election. China government announced Hong Kong citizens can elect one of the candidate who are selected by China government. For this announcement, Hong Kong citizens got angry, so they started to fight for their democratization.
Election process of administration minister is immediate cause of revolution but it is not a only reason. In 1997, the time Hong Kong was retroceded to China, Hong Kong’s economy has gradually increased and they called financial hub. However, after Hong Kong is under control in China government, their economic condition has been changed. Many Hong Kong citizens were deprived of their work because of Chinese who moved to Hong Kong for a work. Also, as lots of Chinese moved to Hong Kong, Hong Kong has suffered scarcity of houses. These serious economic problems has invited resistance against China and as the result, they started to fight for the democracy of Hong Kong.
Chinese government has been taking an unexpected action about Hong Kong revolution. Chinese mass media has not reported Hong Kong revolution and they just reported Middle Eastern dispute. Also in the biggest Chinese portal site Baidu, Hong Kong revolution articles are hard to find. Even though Chinese government’s information control, a lot of Chinese students know about revolution and many Chinese citizens support Hong Kong’s democracy revolution. However, because of the information control by Chinese government, many Chinese still does not know about Hong Kong revolution and their purpose.
Hong Kong demonstrators still struggle for their freedom and democracy. They are making change for their country and this is a huge movement.
