Introduction
In the case of Wal-Mart stores, the human resource challenges and approaches of solving the human resource issues the global organization are highlighted. The company, which is the world’s largest employer, has not escaped the challenges presented by the human resource leadership practitioner. According to the article, the company has had a large workforce, recording a record high of 93, 000 domestic employees in the USA by 2001 (Mark, 2003). The company spends a huge chunk of its finances in motivating the employees and thus the exhibited human resource success. The figure has been on the increase since 1996. The success of the organization is linked to the culture of the organization, which was instilled by its founder Walton. The organization faced a number of human resource challenges, among them the issue of gender bias in employment. The organizations management found the solution to the problem and its currently employing at a fair ratio, with eh company’s female employees equaling the male ones.
Organizational culture
Wal-Mart has human resource policies, which are shared across its divisions. The hierarchical organization of the employees allowed systematic report of issues which concern the organizations well being. The company also incorporated a computerized information system, which assist in the guiding the staff. The organization still upholds the culture instilled to the organization by the founder of the company; Sam Walton. The company supports his belief of genuine customer service. The employees are also rewarded according to their performance thus the performance is enhanced. The organization demands of flexibility from the employees.
Challenges
The company faces and has faced a number of challenges, owing to the fact that it is global organization. Some the company has faced performance management, planning, training and development, recruitment, industrial relations and compensation of the employees. The company was at one time criticized and said to have gender bias in its employment endeavors. The company effectively dealt with that and adjusted and conformed to the societal wishes. The executive vice president wished to know what type of information was necessary to evaluate the company’s employment practice. It established a goal of reflecting the community through the employed staff. 50 per cent of the workforce was to represent women. The company has to ensure that the organization maintains sustainable development and increases its potential human capital. It has to understand and appreciate the different cultures of its employees. The company’s human resource leadership also has to deal with a broad range of cultures so that every employee may be treated fairly.
The company global human resource leadership has to deal with different taxation systems of the different countries in which it operates. Some countries in which the organization deals in have a strict tax policy where as others are flexible. The international human resource leadership is mainly involved with the personal life of the employees while the national human resource leaders are limited. The company’s international human resources are also faced with external forces such as labor laws whereas the national human resource dealers do not deal with the external forces.
Recommendation
The top management of the organization should continue to show a high level of flexibility and understanding of the differences of cultures. It should train and develop its employees and instill a culture of diversity in the organizations work place. It should set up regional human resource mangers that are experienced and are well versed with the culture of the country they head.
Conclusion
Wal-Mart stores have indeed exhibited the kind of challenges that a global corporation’s human resource department faces. The organization was faced with human resource challenges and it took necessary approaches of solving the human resource issues the global organization faced. Due to that, the company was the world’s largest employer in 2004.
