Incorporate into the essay a discussion of the three higher levels of learning (Apps, 1990, pp. 26-27).  You can find the three higher levels of learning by clicking on Activities in this module and then clicking on Starting Your Learning Journal in relationship to your motivation for independent study. With which of these three types of learning are you most comfortable? least comfortable? Which do you expect to do most often in your academic work? If procrastination is a weakness, you may want to research this word on the internet and find out tips/ways to help you avoid procrastination.

Written Assignment Write a proposal explaining the controversial topic you wish to research.

This proposal should be 3-5 pages in length. It is intended to encourage you to reflect on the topic you have chosen, reflect on the perspectives or pros and cons of the issues concerning that topic, and to discover the kinds of sources you will be using for your research paper (such as journal articles and books).

Your proposal should include the following:

1. A description of your controversial topic. This includes a brief historical overview of your topic.

2. A discussion of the range of points of view or perspectives

(pro and con) concerning the topic. 3. A  discussion of the main interest groups and/or main

people you have found that seem to stand out as having perspectives (both pro and con).  

4. A discussion of the journals/books/resources you are finding that address your controversial topic.

5. When making citations within the text of your essay or when creating the reference page, please use APA style of citations.
