The Edges of the Civilized World by Alison Hawthorne Deming

While writing an articlefor Islands magazine the writer traveled with some local photographers to the Sea of Cortez. One of her goals was to get an understanding about what was unique to the natural history and local customs. While traveling out to sea, the witer notices different sea animals such as sea lions and dolphins. As some of the tourist suited up and jumped in the water , Alison was amazed as she watch the sea lions come close to the humans. Immediately she became distrubed as to why are these people distrubing nature. She couldn't understand why people have to push their limits and not give the animals a respectful distance that wouldn't disrupt them. After a few weeks on the trip , the reader meets a field biologist who swims with sea lions as a part of his job, His desire was to connect with these animals in their environment and help them build a sense of comfort around humans. People tend to have a hunger to be close to the nonhuman world, or at least to a place in the world where humans are forbidded. Convinced that the interaction with these nonhuman animals was far from being harmless, she question if too much interaction caused a danger to the animlas. Having become angry with the situation, It made her realize she was dealind with a wounded relationship, and her goal was to domesticate every wild creature into a safe and innocent expersiion of human desire. For centuries the word civiized has been associated with the life of cites, with bulding communties and deending them against these barbarians, who's destiny is to domesticate the wild. BUT what does ti mean to be civilized when the perils of global warming, the heat -trapped sky, shrinking wildlands, and extinction that this is the waking up of the earths global commons, which is the future that is in our hands, This point in history seems obvious to be civilized is to set limits, and understand when our comfort and freedom is too extreme, and overall is the well- being of others and the planet that sustains us all, and understand there is possibilites in humankind, and setting limits. If the human world would understand that life on earth as commons and ourselves become responsible in maintaining habitability, the citizenship would no longer be considered merely of our local human community, citizenship would mean learning to live in a responsible relationship with peole, plants, and especially animals. Although we know that the locals want be able to fix this probably, but thos e that love to interact with the animlas do not mean to cause harm to them or others. But human hunger is robbing the earth's of it's future. The rich rob the earth with their gred, and the poor rob the earth out of necessity. But the good that comes from travelingcontinues to be real and enticing. Alison then turns her attention to ecotourism a promise to gamble.Established in 1991 the Ecotourism Society address the concerns of the well- being of the environment and locals. Some eel that we as a scoiety need to stop trying to control nature. But she feels that we as humans are a denied a position to be a powerful force on this earth.Human desire for wilderness is sroind and deep, which simply means we love nature to death. Now leaving the Sea of Cortez, Alison travels to the Mexican state of Michoacan to visit monarch buttreflies. Migrating from Ontario, not all will migrate back. The area where the butterflies migrate from is a poor area, farmed by locals, the area is now become largrely deforested. One will never understand what it means top flutter around im the wind, and pile up in trees by the millions, on warm days they will flutter like paper . As winter apporaches the monarchs will store up much need fat, fat so rich that if the forest was to catch fire the trees will burn like oil lamps. In conclusion Alison tells that we many never know the impact that the monarchs, sea lions or dolphins have on the tourist, but she can surely tell you how they impacted her.
