Writing Assignment #1

In this assignment, each student is asked to locate a newspaper from the date of his or her birth. The newspaper can be any that was published at that time: New York Times, The Rocky Mountain News, and the San Antonio Light as examples.

Once the newspaper is located, each student is asked to locate three (3) things: an advertisement, a cartoon, and an article. Once all of these items are found, the student is asked to show (explain, define, narrate, describe) how these three (3) items reflect who the student is today.

Using any of the rhetorical modes studied this semester (narration, description, cause and effect, classification, division, extended definition, or comparison and contrast), each student is asked to create an original composition.

Remember spoking, mapping, clustering, free writing and parallel sequencing as methods for outlining/prewriting.

Also, the introductory paragraph must include a catcher: rhetorical question, quote, stat, scenario. The thesis statement must be fully developed, and the forecasting statement must include a complete list of the items to be discussed in the order of listing.

The body of the essay should include development of all that is in the introduction, as well as specific supporting details.

The conclusion should sum up the composition without introducing new or undeveloped ideas.

Since each student is using a minimum of three (3) sources, the Modern Language Association (MLA) format for multiple works from one (1) source or an article in a newspaper will be used for the Works Cited page.
