Bullying: An Annotated Bibliography
1. Bullying: the psychological effects of bullying at school and the workplace. (2011). United States: Webster's Digital Services.
This book is created to show the effects of bullying both at school and the workplace. It dispels the myth that bullying only affects children and provides examples of how adults can be bullied. It offers information on everything about bullying, including how to recognize a child who is being bullied in class, to the effects of bullying both socially and academically. It shows methods that are used to deal with the situation, as well as how to prevent such a vice from taking place in future. Effective ways on dealing with bullying such that that no new problems will emerge are explained in detail.
My assessment: This book is relevant as it offers credible information concerning ways of identifying bullied individuals. Most importantly, it shows the effects of bullying, which if undeterred, might affect an individuals life, with adverse consequences in future. It fortifies my opinion that both children and adults are affected by the vice. It also shows the different ways drinking, transference of emotions, and denial. On the other hand, children shy away from dealing with the problem, resulting in behavioral problems in future. Generally, this book will be a useful source of information concerning the different ways through which bullying affects children and adults.
2. Hutcherson, A. N. (2012). Psychology of victimization. New York: Nova Science Publishers.
Detailed analysis as to why victimizers, including bullies, behave in such a manner is provided by the this book. The author provides detailed analysis of the psychological condition of a bully in order to establish their reason for that behavior. Among the reasons offered include family instability, peer pressure, inferiority complex, and use of drugs and other mood altering substances. Hutcherson states that bullying is a manifestation of a deeper psychological problem, and bullies need help in as much as victims require assistance. This resource is important as it shows that for the problem of bullying to be eradicated, bullies should be targeted for psychological treatment. Through changing the behavior of bullies, bullying will be completely eradicated.
My assessment: My assertion that bullying arises from a psychological disorder will be supported by facts contained within this article. It addresses the manifestation of aggression through bullying as an emotional problem that needs to be dealt with. This book will fortify the argument that the only way to eradicate bullying is to deal with both sides of the divide- bullies and victims alike. Overlooking bullies when dealing with the vice only creates obstacles for solving the social issue. This source strongly supports the assertion that both bullies and victims are needed to bring about change.
3. Rigby, K. (2012). Bullying interventions in schools: Six Basic Approaches. West Sussex: John Wiley & Sons LTD.
Rigby offers solutions concerning how to curb the bullying menace. His book proposes six steps that may be used to turn around a bullying situation into a peaceful co-existence between individuals. In-depth step-by-step approaches to be used when dealing with bullying are provided in a manner that is easy ti implement. One of the approaches offered includes disciplinary effort, where bullies are subjected to punishments as a way of trying to change their behavior. This method is not always effective and other ways may be considered such as meditation that bullies may reflect of their behavior, support group for victims where they share their experiences, strengthening the victim through counseling, restorative practice where an alternative activity is explored for the bullies, and method of shared concern.
My assessment: The ideas contained in this book coincide with my argument that non-traditional methods should be incorporated in eradicating bullying in schools. It analyzes and examines the strength and weaknesses of each method, and offers alternative ways to deal with bullying. Since bullying situations are different, varying methods should be used for different situations so that the best possible outcome can be realized. This source concurs with the theory that different methods of eradicating bullying should be used in different situations.
4. Ferguson, A. (2013). Online bullying. New York: PowerKids Press.
The advancement of technology has resulted in positive growth in all sectors, and some that are negative such as the spread of bullying. The writer explains that online bullying has spread to schools, workplaces, and all spheres of life, as the bully’s anonymity makes it easy to pick on people as their identity might go undetected. Examples are provided where children who were bullied through social sites ended up committing suicide. Online bullying creates a new dimension to the problem of bullying, as the perpetrator may be unknown, and therefore, the problem can only be dealt with from the victim’s perspective. Ferguson offers suggestions of dealing with online bullying such as tracking the anonymous online accounts and holding the owners responsible, as well as psychological counseling for the victims.
My assessment: The book recognizes the evolving forms of bullying to include cyber bullying and firmly supports my theory that bullying has evolved from a confrontational aspect where the perpetrator is known, to a sphere where the victimizer is unknown. As such, since the problem of bullying is constantly changing to include new aspects, new ways of dealing with the vice should as well be explored. This source provides evidence that will prove my statement that non-conventional ways should be considered when dealing with the non-conventional problem of bullying.
