According to Durkheim (2013), codes of ethics are designed to act as guidelines for professionals while in their respective professions. They are meant to ensure that professionals are competent and also to ensure that the services received from different people who are in the same profession are the same. Thus, professional code of ethics is important in that they help to ensure uniformity in a particular profession. Psychological code of ethics is not different. They are designed to help psychologists to carry out their duties professionally. It is worth noting that each profession has some distinct code of ethics that are defined by the nature of the profession.
Fisher (2012) provides that psychologists should also uphold integrity. According to Fisher (2012), integrity means as a psychologist an individual should always be ready and willing to do what is right. For instance, a psychologist should not tell a lie about a client not unless there is a remote contingency that may prompt a psychologist to do so. Psychologists should also uphold justice by treating all clients equally. A psychologist should follow all the professional procedures regardless of the client they are attending to. The greater part of the life of the profession of a psychologist involves dealing with human beings. Hence, the psychological code of ethics requires that a psychologist should be an individual with respect for all people. Some of my personal values include fairness, accountability, trustworthiness and honesty. It is evident that all of the values that I have are inclusive of the psychological code of ethics. Hence, I can possibly fit in the profession of psychology since I can be able to uphold all the code of ethics of psychology.
There are vast benefits that come along with having code of ethics for any profession. For the case of psychology, psychological code of ethics play a very critical role in ensuring that psychologists remain competent (Kaslow, 2004). Since in psychology a psychologists deals with fellow human beings, a psychologist may develop either a negative or a positive attitude towards a client and hence thereby become subjective rather than being objective. The psychological code of ethics plays an important role in ensuring that such incidences do not occur. They act as guidelines for psychologists and hence help them to avoid any form of misconduct while in their line of duty.
The psychological code of ethics is also important in that they ensure uniformity in the profession of psychology. For instance, different psychologists can give a similar diagnosis for the same client. The code of ethics acts as guidelines to psychologists and hence they ensure uniformity in the profession. Psychological code of ethics guide psychologists while I their jobs and hence they reduce the liabilities that may befall a psychologist as a result of failure to act ethically.
