INSTRUCTIONS

For this assignment you need to create a professional development plan outlining the fire fighter in question. You be as thorough as possible in the development of your plan and provide an accurate timeline of completion.

Below is a sample of fire department’s policies and procedures along with a sample appendix of an outline of a professional development plan. Use these as a guideline; however, they should not be taken word for word.

Project 2 You are the station captain at Parkville station #5 and firefighter John Smith asks you during a review of his performance evaluation where he stands as a possible candidate for the Apparatus Operator position. You as the company officer should utilize the following policy and develop a professional development plan for fighter Smith. Firefighter John Smith is a 29 year old firefighter with 3 years service to Parkville Fire Department and has completed the following certifications:

• NFPA1001 Firefighter 1&2

• EMT Paramedic

• Emergency Vehicle Operations Course

Minimum Requirements for Employee Promotion

Authority-Vested in the Fire Chief by City of Parkville ordinance 104 – 1967

Responsibility-It is the responsibility of the Deputy Fire Chief to review and update this policy as needed for the safe and efficient operation of the Fire Department.

Policy- Employees applying to take the promotional exams for the rank of Apparatus Operator, Lieutenant, Captain, will meet the minimum requirements of this policy.

Procedure- When an employee applies to take a promotional exam the employee shall be reviewed by a promotional committee to ensure the employee meets the minimum requirements of the desired position before moving to the examination phase. Upon approval of the promotional committee the employee will move to the examination phase and shall be given a test date.

The promotional committee shall review employees against the criteria contained in this policy. The procedures contained in this policy are non discriminatory and are not based on race, sex, religion, or national origin.

Certified to NFPA 1021 Officer I

Certified to NFPA 1031Inspector I

Certified to NFPA 1041 Instructor I

Captain

Serve as Lieutenant two (2) YEARS

Certified to NFPA 1021 Officer II
