Time Limit: 2 hours.

Textbook, ACI Code, and written notes permitted. Clearly state any assumptions you need to make.

Use f’c = 4000psi and fy = 60,000 psi.

1. Figure 1 shows the factored shear force diagram for the left half of a simply supported beam.

Shear reinforcement consists of #3 double leg stirrups as shown. Determine the smallest

distance from the left support that a spacing of 10 in. may be used.

2. Figure 2 shows a simply supported beam with 2-#9 bars that extend 12 inches beyond the

support point. Calculate the development length for the #9 bar. Determine whether the beam

satisfies all development requirements of the ACI Code.

3. Figure 3 shows a simply supported beam with a concentrated unfactored live load of 100 kips at

midspan. The self weight of the beam can be neglected. Calculate the effective moment of

inertia of the beam according to ACI 318.

4. A square concrete column section reinforced with 6 - #9 bars is shown in Figure 4. For the strain

diagram given, calculate the nominal axial load and moment capacities. Determine the

corresponding phi-factor (φ) according to ACI 318.
