Early Scientists and Microbiology

Read the report, FAQ: Human Microbiome published by the American Academy of Microbiology.  In your own words, describe the difference between the genetic and the ecological definition of the term “microbiome.”  What information from this was most surprising to you?  Include the section title in which you found this information.

Why Are Viruses Different from True Living Microorganisms?

Viruses are typically not classified as true living organisms by biologists. Viruses have DNA or RNA and protein but are not able to replicate until they infect a host cell. Within the cell they must use the enzymes and molecular building blocks the host cell provides to replicate. Viruses cause disease in all living organisms and they are able to persist outside the cell for extended periods until they can once again infect a suitable host cell.

 For this module's threaded discussion we will comment on how viruses differ from true living organisms such as bacteria and fungi. They infect the same as any other pathogen that causes disease. Live and obtain the necessary nutrients they need from their hosts but still are not classified as true living organisms. Please open the discussion with why you believe this is true. Contrast the differences and similarities that viruses have with living organisms such as bacteria and fungi. For this module, make your first post to this discussion, and your second to the discussion titled "Prions."

While we are on the subjects of "unusual" organisms, also comment on prions.  How do they compare with viruses and other microbial organism? What diseases are they thought to cause?

Antibiotics That Kill Bacteria

Antibiotics have made it possible for humans to fight infectious disease. When considering how antibiotics control bacterial pathogens we find that the mechanism is the prevention of some necessary physiological process of the bacterium. For example, streptomycin prevents the formation of protein within the bacterium. So preventing the bacteria from translating and building crucially important proteins will kill bacteria. This provides the means by which the pathogens are controlled once the human body is infected. What I pose to you is that humans are made up of cells and these cells require that we build proteins. Why don't these same antibiotics harm our cells and damage us when we take them to control disease? If an antibiotic inhibits a ribosome from functioning in the translation of a protein in a bacterium why won't that same drug inhibit our ribosome? Build a discussion by providing possible reasons why certain antibiotics can control bacteria without doing any serious damage to humans.

The immune system is an amazing instrument of the human body. The value of a healthy immune system means that the body will fight off disease. Vaccination manipulates an important component of the immune system by selectively building immunity against a pathogen that we target, and has played an important role in disease prevention and epidemiology.  The topic of vaccination has become quite controversial for some people, and growing numbers of our population refuse to vaccinate their children even our modern times.  In this discussion post some common arguments for versus against vaccinating.  Note the sources from which you find each argument.  Which arguments are supported with peer-reviewed scientific research?  In your search, did you find regions in the US where diseases that were once rare have resulted in outbreaks in communities who are predominantly against vaccination?  Please comment on another classmates response as well before the second Friday of this module.
