Extra Credit for PSH331

Note: All extra-credit points will be added to your total (best four exam scores, 25 points each, totaling 100 points). All extra-credit is due on the last day of class. Hand in your work to me at our last class (or turn into my office, room 134 Holmes, or to my secretary in room 133 Holmes). Every day your extra-credit packet is late is 2 points off, so be sure to hand in your materials on time. (If you hand it in late to my door/mailbox, please get a faculty or staff member to date/initial it. Otherwise, I date it when I see it – and that could be days later.)

Here are your options:

1) Extra-credit research opportunities – different every semester.

2) Extra-credit exercises – These are the measures posted on Angel throughout the course (and handed out in class). You can earn 1 point per exercise (completed and scored), with a maximum of two exercises per unit. (10 points maximum)

Unit 1: Rosenberg SE Scale, Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding

Unit 2: Self-Monitoring, Right-Wing Authoritarianism, Big Five, Attributional Style Questionnaire, Relationship Beliefs Inventory

Unit 3: Psychopathy Checklist, Sociosexuality Inventory

Unit 4: TAT, dream reports, Experiences in Close Relationships

Unit 5: Role Const. Rep. Test, Hardiness, Carl Rogers essay, PDQ-R

3) Extra-credit paper -- Write a 10-page, double-spaced, typed self-analysis, using at least 5 personality tests as "data" about yourself, and pull together information from your life to support the results of your tests. Use at least one test from each of the five units; you can use more, but one from each unit is the minimum. Further instructions appear below. (10 points maximum) Further instructions are below.

Self-analysis paper: 10 points

Instructions for writing the self-analysis paper: For this assignment, I would like you to use the results of at least 5 of the extra-credit exercises above – as mentioned, one from each of the five units.

Your paper can take one of two formats. Most students conduct a self-analysis; others like a little psychological distance and pretend that they are a therapist assessing a client. Either way, I want you to combine the results of the exercises with other, autobiographical information about yourself, and tell me whether and how the data from the exercises fit with what you know about yourself. Of course, “what you know about yourself” is a very broad category and includes, potentially, your family background (genetic and environmental), cultural background, peer experiences, romantic relationship experiences, work or academic experience, psychiatric history, health history, current concerns, future plans, and whatever other factors you feel might have influenced your personality test scores. If all goes well, your basic personality should emerge from all these disparate sources.

The paper should be typed, double-spaced, and 8-10 pages in length. Please make sure that all your materials (i.e., the five exercises) are stapled or clipped together and clearly marked with your name. If you would like me to return your paper and/or exercises, please include a stamped, self-addressed (8 1/2 X 11 inch or larger) envelope for me to mail the materials to you. All papers and exercises are private and for my eyes only. All papers not claimed (by the beginning of the next semester) and/or mailed back will be destroyed.
