Intercultural Communication ( Respect Writer )
APPLICATION PAPER #1
TOPIC: Intercultural Communication (Chapter 3)
DRAFT DUE: Friday, September 26, 2014 (5 points)
FINAL PAPER DUE: Friday, October 10, 2014 (10 points)
REQUIREMENTS: The application paper must be two to three pages typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and in 12 point font (Times New Roman or Arial). Please include your name, due date and course section in the top, right hand corner of your first page. Your name must be on the upper right hand corner of every additional page. Your paper must include a solid introduction, body, and conclusion. Proper grammar and language rules must be followed for you to receive a desirable grade. Sources are not required for this paper, but if you use any sources to support information in your paper it must be in APA format. Remember, if you use two or more words in a row from the course textbook, it should be cited.
Papers are due on the dates listed above. Any draft turned in after class on September 26, 2014, will receive zero points. Any final paper received after class on October 10, 2014, is not entitled to full credit. Emailing your paper to me does not count as being on time if you are not in class.
PROMPT: Think of a friend or co-worker from another culture that you are familiar with. Write about your relationship with this person from an intercultural communication perspective. You need to include your initial thoughts about this person, how you got to know and understand this person and their culture better, and how things have changed now as you look back on your relationship with this person. You may also want to discuss specific interactions such as how you greeted each other when you met, do you both use eye contact when you speak to each other, or were you ever worried about saying or doing anything to offend the person and his/her culture, etc.
Your paper must include terms and concepts related to Chapter 3 of the course textbook. You must reference at least two of the seven cultural variations in discussing the differences between your two cultures. This does not mean you merely state, “He was from a high-context and I was from a low-context culture.” You need to explain what led you to make that conclusion and provide examples that illustrate the differences. You must also discuss if you used any of the recommendations listed under the section “Improving Intercultural Communication” in understanding the differences between the two cultures. You may include additional concepts found in Chapter 3, but it is not necessary.
THE POINT OF THIS PAPER: The point of this paper is not to torture you. It is for you to take the information you learned, analyze it, and show me you understand it enough to be able to apply it to your life.
