Genetics of Inherited Traits Learning Team Presentation
Topic: Each person will be assigned a unique topic related to the genetic inheritance of traits and diseases. The topics include:
1. Autosomal dominant inheritance
2. Autosomal recessive inheritance
3. Genomic imprinting and dynamic mutations
4. X-linked inheritance
5. Autosomal aneuploidy
6. Sex chromosome aneuploidy
7. Congenital abnormalities arising at the fetal stage
8. Common disorders of adults (ex. breast cancer-BRCA I/II, hyperuricemia and gout, familial hyperlipidemia/dyslipidemia, Li Fraumeni syndrome, Lynch syndrome)
9. Environment related polymorphisms (ex. Malaria and sickle cell disease – if you select this topic, you need to focus on more than the mutation, the presentation needs to include a discussion of selective pressures promoting maintenance of certain genetic mutations)

For this assignment, you will investigate one genetic pattern of inheritance. Each type of inheritance can be passed through a family that may increase a person’s risk of developing disease at some point in life. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation to be delivered during week two.
This activity is as follows:
1. Describe the inheritance pattern that you were assigned.
2. Research and describe the genetic process responsible for transmission between generations, and identify one disease or condition that can results when defective (mutant) genes are transmitted between generations. You might find it helpful to include a graphic explaining how a deleterious gene is transmitted between generations. This is known as a pedigree. Consider where the gene is located (autosome or sex chromosome, whether the mutation is dominant or recessive, what happens in the carrier state).
3. Describe how this type of inheritance of a mutant gene might affect a person’s anatomy and physiology (what is the disease, what organs does it affect, what complications can it cause, and why?).
4. Discuss the probability of inheriting the disease (disease development can be dependent on whether the mutation is dominant, recessive or sex-linked). Are there any credible genetic tests available to determine carriers of the condition? If so, how accurate are they and what does the data indicate about the number of people in the US affected by this condition?
5. Personal perspective:
a. What did you learn from this assignment?
6. References (you should include the links from above and your textbook, at a minimum)
7. Format the information as a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation with 8-12 slides (approximately – more is always better than less) and speaker notes.
8. In-class overview: Students will present their findings to the class as part of their score on the assignment.

· Each of the following concepts is addressed thoroughly, including the basics of the concepts followed by how the source helped you better understand the issue.
Introduction · Background on your inheritance pattern Genetics of transmitting genes to offspring – pattern of inheritance · How are mutations transmitted from parents to offspring for this condition Potential Consequences of deleterious mutations arising from this mode of genetic transmission Probability of inheritance · If a parent has a mutation (or both parents), what is the likelihood of offspring developing the same problems Personal perspective · What did you learn by this assignment? Conclusions · Key Points/Recommendations fully researched and documented on the slides References · Sources properly cited within presentations (on slides) · Must include at least 2 sources other than the text that are peer reviewed; you should include information from the human genome project
