ENG 120: College Composition I

Review Assignment Sheet

For the second paper of the semester, you will write a review of A Source of Identity: Contrasting Personal Environments, an art exhibit currently running at the McIninch Art Gallery on the Southern New Hampshire University campus. The Gallery is located in Robert Frost Hall (first floor). For more information about the McIninch Art Gallery, including hours of operation, please visit http://www.snhu.edu/908.asp.

Your review should adhere—more or less—to the guidelines presented in Chapter 6 of Writing Today. Your review must include an introduction and a description or summary of the subject. This means you will need to research the artists and read the exhibit information provided by McIninch Art Gallery and Southern New Hampshire University (and, possibly, local newspapers). Your review should offer a clear thesis statement. Your review must present and explain the strengths and limitations of the art exhibit—as you see them. You should explore the meaning(s) and larger significance of this interesting exhibit. Finally, your review must conclude with an overall judgment of the art exhibit. Remember, reviews are subjective, but they are also informative; they rely equally on opinion and research. This is your chance to express an informed opinion about a current exhibit at your University.

As with your memoir, I expect your writing to be polished and purposeful. We’ve been discussing rhetoric this semester, so I also expect your essay to be rhetorically effective—persuasive, engaging, and audience-focused. Your essay should be organized and cohesive, and you should demonstrate an awareness of tone and a concern for style. Most of all, I want to hear YOU on the page.

Your final review should be 4-5 pages (double spaced). It should follow MLA style guidelines.

Your partial draft is due on October 7th. Your full draft is due on October 10th. Your final version is due on October 14th.

If you have any questions or concerns, please see me during office hours or email at [email protected].

You will be required to visit the gallery on Friday, October 3, 2014 during class time. You are required to look at *all* the pieces, and you are encouraged to stay at the gallery for a long time. You will sign the guestbook on October 3 and post a response to the exhibit on BlackBoard. (Did you like it? Why or why not? What was your favorite piece? How did you feel after visiting the gallery? What do you think the theme of the exhibit is? In other words, what’s the central idea behind the exhibit?)
