To complete this you must read chapters 4 and 8 from the book Globalization and Its Discontents. Both of these chapters are available in separate documents (named Stiglitz, Ch.4 and Stiglitz, Ch.8) on blackboard.

Question need to ask from this reading

In the book Globalization and Its Discontents, economist Joseph Stiglitz argues that IMF intervention worsened the East Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. How, according to Stiglitz?

Stiglitz also argues that the IMF has another agenda besides its stated agenda of promoting stability and growth in LDCs. What does he mean by this? What, according to Stiglitz is the IMF’s other agenda?

Work Environment

From glassdoor.com, one of the former employees who worked in headquarter states that, “you will learn a lot from smart people around you, meritocracy, if you do well they will treat you well (don't forget that this also means if you don't do well they will let you go).” It means working at the Goldman Sachs Group, we can meet lots of talented people. So in order to survive at Goldman Sachs, we have to work hard 24/7. Also from a current employee, he/she mentions Goldman Sachs Group is very culturally diverse. Employees come from all over the world, but it is rare to find any type of discrimination. Nevertheless, once the management likes the employee, it will be much easier for him/her to get lots of opportunities. Also one of the current employees mentions, peer review is a very important part in working at the Goldman Sachs Group; it helps employees make comments to each other and help them improve.

However, both current and former employees talk about the negative side of working at Goldman Sachs. There is no real work life balance, people should have higher expected for themselves, usually is more than the expectation of the company. It looks like people have to sell their soul for the company; although they may earn lots of money, they will lose their family, etc.

Conclusion

After researching the Goldman Sachs Company, I would still like to work there. As finance major, I feel my passion for working as a financial analyst and my knowledge fits the company’s business segments. Furthermore, I prefer to work with smart or talented people, because I can always discover what I can learn from others. Moreover, the Goldman Sachs group is an international company. It has branch companies in China, so I can work either in the U.S. or China.
