Instructions

Week 4: Paper 1

The student is to take a stand (make an argument) concerning the influence of technology in ethical and social contexts.  “Technology” may be in general or you may select an aspect or aspects of technology.

See syllabus for more instructions and information.

Part 2: Outline and Resources

By the end of week 5, please, submit an Outline and Annotated Bibliography.

OUTLINE

Submit an outline of your paper that includes the headings and an overview of the major areas of discussion/content. An outline would look something like this:

I. Topic and main claim

II. Schumacher’s first argument

1. Modern technology and working class

a. Profit and leisure time

2. Objection and Rebuttal

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

Include an annotated bibliography with your list of sources. Remember you need at least 5 resources. A typical example might look like this (normally double-spaced):

King, Winston L. “The Existential Nature of Buddhist Ultimates.” Philosophy of East and West 33.3 (1983): 263–271. Print.

In this paper, the author evaluates the way in which the Buddhist treatment of existential questions has evolved over time. Buddha spent little time positing answers to metaphysical quandaries, but more contemporary Buddhist practitioners have ventured to develop responses to questions about what exists and why. The author considers whether modern Buddhism has altogether abandoned its classic roots, concluding it has not. He then evaluates the role emptiness plays in Buddhist ontology.

In providing this information, be sure to properly evaluate your outside resources based on criteria found at http://www.umuc.edu/library/libhow/websearching.cfm. Use reputable sources to support your argument. Reputable resources are those that come from peer review journals, such as those that can be found using the UMUC LIBRARY sources. Do Not use Wikipedia and other such online references that can either be changed without peer review, or does not have a system of peer review to begin with. You may use newspaper articles to point toward, or give an example of the issue(s) but they do not count toward the minimum number or sources.

RUBRIC: This second step to writing the final paper will be graded based on these criteria for an excellent outline and annotated bibliography: 1. Provides a complete outline of the paper that contains all of the relevant headings and overviews of discussions/content; goes down at least 2 levels; 2. Provides a thorough review of all the identified sources and a thoughtful analysis of how those sources will be used in the paper; 3. Bibliography incorporates at least 5 scholarly (peer-reviewed) resources effectively that reflect depth and breadth of research; 4. No errors related to organization, grammar and style, and citations.
