Outside of wanting to win the lottery to ensure financial stability for my family, my goal is to become a Labor Relations Specialist. Ideally, I will have to complete my masters in Human Resources, which I have one more year left of graduate school. I have been receiving hand on experience from the Human Resource department at VALU. The Management Analyst at VALU has been teaching me the basics such as SF52’s and many other personnel actions. I have been recommended to take some free training course on TMS and HR University for Human Resources training. I would love to stay here in the Washington, D.C. area to pursue my career. Ultimately, I want to take what I (will) have learned from these free courses and apply it to the “corporate world”. I can see myself working in the Federal Government helping to interpret and administer labor contracts regarding issues such as wages and salaries, employee welfare, healthcare, pensions, and union and management practices.
Academic Development
I have performed best in subjects that involves problem solving and critical thinking. I’ve found solving word problems and case studies very enjoyable. Having to take courses such as Senior Seminar and Argue and Debate, has help me become more contented about presenting information to the Chief of Staff, Associate Dean and Dean of VALU. My academic weaknesses are in psychology and organization. Human Behavioral and organization are important for my future career; to be successful; I will understand how others think.
Academic Development Goal One: To become better organized by maintaining against procrastination.
Action Step: Organize a time management system. I will have a set a certain time for studying and time to complete assignments.
Action Step: Write down all your academic responsibilities. When I first get my syllabi at the beginning of the semester, I will construct a calendar with all my assignment dates.
Action Step: To be proactive and plan in advance.
Academic Development Goal Two: Become more skilled in the Human Resources field
Action Step: I will enroll in some free courses on TMS and HR University. These courses will give me a better understanding of how the Human Resources Federal Government functions.
Action Step: I will order some helpful books or material from Amazon or Barnes and Noble, to help me enhance my knowledge of Human Resources.
Professional Development
The strengths that help me succeed academically and professional would have to be active listening and critical thinking skills. These two skills are very important working for VALU. Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems that I am faced with at VALU. I loved listening to my coworkers or boss’ talk because I am able to give them my full attention to what are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate and not interrupting. The areas that I need to work on would have to public speaking and writing. I have a soft voice, sometimes people have a hard time hearing what saying. I always would love to would on my writing because in college I had a hard time with comma splices. I really enjoy working in the Federal Government because unlike the private sector where companies can go out of business, the government never goes out of business. Agencies or offices may close or transform into new forms, but there will always be government jobs. Employees will always be needed to complete the tasks only government does, and additional employees will always be needed to support them.
